Volume 5 · Letter 273

By the grace of Hashem,

5 Nissan 5712,

Brooklyn,

I greet and bless you,

I respond to your express letter, written at the conclusion of Shabbos, in which you inform me that one is proposing to you a position of Rav and shochet* in the city of ... You ask me what I think of it.

A) Should you accept this position?

If, according to the information at your disposal, it is indeed an Orthodox kehillah*, it would be good to take an interest in this proposal and to accept it.

B) Should you set conditions regarding the women's section of the shul?

According to the description that you give me in your letter, this question does not arise concretely, since there indeed exists a section reserved for the women, in this shul. You shall doubtless be able to arrange all this, when the moment comes, without giving disproportionate weight to this affair, without making it into a question of principle, to which one can answer only in two ways[1]. It must be self-evident that the women daven in the section reserved for them, and the men, in theirs.

C) You wear a long garment on Shabbos, and you wonder whether you should put it on from the very first Shabbos that you spend on the spot[2].

To my knowledge, there are also non-Orthodox kehillos whose rabbi wears a long garment, on Shabbos and Yamim Tovim, or during weddings. I do not therefore think that this garment can weaken your position there.

Furthermore, in order to remove it, one would need to be released from a neder*[3], and, in my opinion, it is better to abstain from this. Moreover, one could be surprised to see a Rav, having a beard and who, nevertheless, wears a short jacket, on Shabbos and Yamim Tovim, at the moment of the drashah* or of the Yizkor*.

May Hashem cause you to settle in a fitting manner, materially and spiritually, very soon, and may you celebrate the Yom Tov of Matzos in a kosher and joyous manner.

With my brachah*,

Notes

(1) By yes or by no, thus running the risk of a refusal.

(2) Which could shock those who are not accustomed to such garments.

(3) Which entails a specific ceremony.
