I greet and bless you,
You ask me about your studies. Indeed, you learn each day eighteen chapters of Mishnah*. Your study is therefore only superficial, and it leaves you little time for the other subjects. You ask me what I think of it.
In my opinion, you should maintain this positive practice consisting of studying these eighteen chapters each day, all the more so since, as your letter seems to indicate, it is, in some sense, a neder*, which you have formulated[1]. You shall study some passages of the Mishnah more deeply and you shall thus combine the two forms of study[2]. Furthermore, you shall have time remaining for the other parts of Torah.

(2) Superficial study and deep study.

... בשאלתו בענין סדר הלימוד שלו, שלומד בכל יום ח"י פרקים משניות ובמילא הלימוד הוא שטחי לפ"ע וגם נשאר מעט זמן ללימודים אחרי ושואל דעתי בזה:
הנה לדעתי יחזיק במנהג טוב שלו לחזור בכ"י ח"י פרקים ובפרט שכפי מכתבו יש בזה ג"כ מעין נדר, וילמוד רק איזה משניות בכ"י בעיון לפ"ע ובמילא זה וזה יהי' בידו ויהי' ג"כ די זמן ללימודים בשאר מקצועות בתורה...
