To the distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,

devotes himself to communal needs

and to the service of Hashem, HaRav Yosef[1],

I greet and bless you,

I have duly received your correspondence of 26 Adar, and I have written, this day, to the distinguished chassid who fears Hashem, HaRav Moshe HaKohen Shayevits[2], to indicate how, in my opinion, the letter of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, must be read. I see in it no limit on the duration of his presidency.

I would like to return, by the present, to the content of the letter that you wrote me, which you surely remember. You evoke there the great imperfections of the activity in the area of Chabad, in Chicago. You base yourself, to substantiate this conclusion, upon your own appreciation of the situation, and you conclude your letter by affirming that it is important to revive all the activities of Chabad in your city, and that it cannot be otherwise.

The great Rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself faithfully to communal needs, HaRav Shlomo Zalman Hecht[3], has just informed me that the association of the Chabad-Lubavitch shuls has begun to function. I have good hope that you will invest the strength and the ardor that Hashem has granted you in this action, in order to enlarge it and embellish it, to the fullest extent possible.

I think that you would have lent it your assistance in any case, but, since you sent me a letter whose content I recalled earlier, I wished simply to urge you to redouble your ardor in the matter, well beyond what you would have done in an ordinary manner.

Moreover, we have received a promise from the Alter Rebbe[4], as the letter of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, printed at the end of Sefer HaKitzurim on the Tanya, page 122, recalls. Indeed, thanks to his mesirus nefesh*, the Alter Rebbe obtained from the Heavenly Court that those who would be bound to him and would follow his way should systematically have the upper hand, in everything that concerns Torah, yiras Shamayim*, and good conduct.

I enclose for you a copy of my letter[5], addressed to all, on the occasion of the Yom Tov of Pesach, which is approaching.

With my brachah* for a kosher and joyous Yom Tov of Pesach and for good health.

קבלתי מכתבו מכ"ו אדר, וכתבתי היום להוו"ח אי"א נו"נ עוסק בצ"צ וכו' מוה"ר משה שי' הכהן שייעוויטש הפירוש לפי דעתי בנוסח מכתב כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, אשר איני רואה בו כל הגבלה לענין זמן נשיאותו.

בזה באתי לעוררו ע"ד תוכן מכתבו אלי - שבטח זוכר הוא - בחסרון הגדול בענין עסקנות בשדה חב"ד בשיקאגא וסיבת הדבר לפי מה שמשער הוא, ובסיום מכתבו שנחוץ הדבר וא"א בלא"ה להחיות את כל הענינים במחנה חב"ד בעירם.

והנה עתה כאשר נודעתי ע"י הרה"ג והרה"ח אי"א נו"נ עוסק בצ"צ באמונה וכו' מוה"ר שלמה זלמן שי' העכט, שאגוד בתי כנסיות חב"ד ליובאוויטש, נגש לעבודה בפועל, תקותי חזקה שכבודו ישקיע בזה את הכחות והמרץ אשר חננו השי"ת להגדיל העבודה ולהאדירה ככל האפשרי, ואם כי בלא"ה בטח הי' עוסק בזה, הרי אחרי שכתב אלי בתוכן הנ"ל כאמור לעיל לא נצרכה אלא להעדפה שיוסיף אומץ בהנ"ל עוד יותר משהי' עושה ע"ד הרגיל, וידוע הבטחת אדמו"ר הזקן (הובא במכתב כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע בסוף ס' קיצורים לתניא ע' קכ"ב) [ש]בגלל המס"נ [שלו], פסקו בב"ד של מעלה אשר בכל ענין של תורה ויראת שמים ומדות טובות, תהי' יד מקושריו (של אדמוה"ז) והולכי בעקבותיו, על העליונה.
