Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1482 — Shidduchim

By the grace of Hashem,

3 Nissan 5712,

I greet and bless you,

I respond to your letter, in which you tell me of your military service. You tell me that you have just been promoted to officer and chaplain of a garrison comprising several battalions.

You doubtless make use of your influence to improve the moral situation there, by all means. I have explained at length here, in the course of a chassidic farbrengen*, that if each one could act only by his own forces, he would have to evaluate them, to measure their intensity. When, on the other hand, it is a matter of assuming a shlichus* connected to Torah and mitzvos, one intervenes as a shaliach* of the Holy One, blessed be He. From then on, one disposes not only of his own strength but also of the power of the One Who created the world by His Word and Who renews the creation at every instant.

From this flow two points:

A) You dispose of all the necessary forces.

B) In the end, the expected result will indeed be obtained. For, who could dictate His conduct to Hashem? And you act as His shaliach!

You write to me, at the end of your letter, that you have been proposed to marry Miss Cohen. You have already met her, and this proposal suits you. You have therefore decided to become engaged. May Hashem cause this to be in a good and fruitful moment, with a good mazal, materially and spiritually.

Your kallah* is a Cohen, and you must therefore set an additional Torah study. Before the marriage, you shall acquire a good knowledge of a Talmudic tractate and, if possible, of the laws pertaining to marriage, in the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch.

With my brachah* of mazel tov,

P. S.: You also write to me that you will likely marry in a year, at the conclusion of your military service and at the end of your kallah's studies at the Beis Yaakov. This delay does not please me. If it does not pose a problem, you should envisage your marriage this coming Kislev, the month of geulah*.

במענה על מכתבו, בו כותב ע"ד שירותו בצבא ואשר עתה מנו אותו ועשוהו לקצין דתי על חטיבה שלמה הכוללת בתוכה כמה יחידות.

הנה בטח משתמש בכל תוקף השפעתו לשפר את מצב חיים הרוחניים בכל

המקצועות, וכבר נתבאר פה בהתועדות בארוכה, אשר א כ"א הי' צריך לפעול בכחות שלו , הרי אז יש לעשות חשבון מהכחות ובמילא מהתוקף שיש לו בזה, אבל בשעה שצריך הוא למלאות תפקיד הקשור בתורה ומצות, הרי אז פועל הוא בתור שלוחו של הקב"ה ובמילא אינו הולך בתוקף שלו עצמו, כ"א בהתוקף של מי שאמר והי' העולם ומחדש בכל יום תמיד מעשה בראשית, ובמילא שתי מסקנות מזה: א) שיש לו די תוקף, והב) שסו"ס יפעול את הענין, כי מי יאמר לו מה תעשה והוא בא בשליחותו של מקום.

מסיים במכתבו שהציעו ל נכבדות וכבר התראה עם מרת תחי', כהן, וההצעה מצאה חן בעיניו והחליטו לסדר קשורי תנאים, הנה יהי רצון מהשי"ת שיהי' בשעה טובה ומוצלחת למזל טוב בגשמיות וברוחניות.

כיון שב"ג כהנת יוסיף שיעור בת"ת. ועד יום החתונה יקנה בקיאות במס' אחת ואם באפשרי גם בדינים הצריכים שבקצשו"ע.

נ"ב: ומה שכתוב במכתבו שכפי הנראה יקבעו זמן החתונה לאחר שנה, כיון שאז יוגמר זמן שירותו בצבא, וכן זמן לימוד ב"ג בבית יעקב, הנה לא נראה דיחוי זה בעיני, ואם אין מניעות מיוחדות כדאי הי' לחשוב ע"ד קביעות זמן החתונה בחדש כסלו הוא חדש הגאולה הבע"ל.
