By the grace of Hashem,

3 Nissan 5712,

Brooklyn,

I greet and bless you,

I wrote to you, some time ago, that it is not in my custom to give mussar*, particularly to those who find themselves in the land "toward which always are turned the eyes of Hashem, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year"[1]. There, whether you wish it or not, you are not subject to the mazalos*[2] and you receive the influence directly from Hashem. Nevertheless, there are obligations one cannot set aside, and I shall therefore set forth my words, at least briefly.

Whether we wish it or not, we are the successors of the Chabad chassidim* of the previous generations, since the era, full of wisdom, of the chassidim of the Alter Rebbe, founder of Chabad. Each of these generations has traced for us the way, and there remains to us now only to accomplish humble works[3].

Nevertheless, it is incumbent upon us ourselves and upon our generation, to bring to its conclusion the transformation of matter, in this period of the "ikvesa de'ikvesa diMeshicha*," to obtain his revelation, here below, in the material world. A rapid reflection upon all this should have the effect of making one tremble. The terrible declarations, set forth by our Sages, regarding Mashiach* and his revelation, with all the precisions that Chassidus* gives in this regard, depend therefore upon our accomplishments. Yet one plays with all this, and each thinks only of his own interest.

The gravity of your arguments is quite evident. To convince oneself of this, it suffices to imagine your reaction if someone were to employ them with regard to you. Now, the Torah affirms that "as the face is reflected in the water..."[4]. There is therefore every reason to think that your friends also receive your arguments in this way.

All this could be developed and, if the Maggid of Dubno[5] were present, he would doubtless have been able to set forth a parable in this regard, which would perhaps have convinced you. But it is a pity to waste your time and mine for all these developments. Each instant that is allotted to us is particularly precious, and I do not know what is brought to you by the one you devote to discussing among yourselves to determine which one has not had the appropriate attitude toward the other, or who is the greatest in Torah, in tefillah*, or in good deeds.

Concretely, begin therefore to act! If there is no other alternative, decide yourselves that you are all entirely right. Nevertheless, you have been educated by the light of Chassidus, and Hashem has therefore granted to each of you the strength to make a gift of your own person for the good of the other. Consequently, know how to set aside your own desires and do everything for the good of your fellow.

I ask you to excuse me if I have offended someone. Nevertheless, the truth remains what it is, even if from it there results an offense for someone.

I address to you my brachah* of hatzlachah* in your sacred shlichus*, and that Hashem cause you to feel, not only by your nefesh haElokis* but also by logic, that you have the merit of taking part in the work of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, to build the sanctuary of Chabad in Eretz HaKodesh*.

In anticipation of your news, good and joyous,

Notes

(1) In Eretz Yisrael.

(2) Unlike the other countries of the world.

(3) Literally, "small vessels."
