Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1477 — Pesach

Volume 5 · Letter 258

By the grace of Hashem,

Rosh Chodesh Nissan 5712,

Brooklyn, New York,

To our brethren, the Bnei Yisrael,

wherever they are found,

may Hashem grant them long life[1],

I greet and bless you,

The Yom Tov of Pesach approaches.

Every event that occurs in the world[2] brings wisdom and delivers a teaching to the man who reflects. This lesson can bear upon the manner of serving Hashem, upon the relations between human beings, or upon both these dimensions together.

If one gives the proper attention, it is easier to bring this lesson into evidence when it comes to Torah, which has the same etymology as horaah, instruction, for it delivers an instruction for life and is called Toras Chaim. So too with its mitzvos. How much more so for what concerns its fundamental principles.

One of these is the remembrance of yetzias Mitzrayim*, which is a great foundation[3], a solid pillar of our Torah and our emunah*. Indeed, this liberation is distinguished[4] from all the other miracles in that we are required to mention it each day, as well as the splitting of the Yam Suf[5]. This obligation falls upon us still more clearly[6] at the start of the Yom Tov of Pesach, on its first night.

Many points can be learned from this event, from its various aspects, and from what accompanied it. I shall here underscore one of them, a point common to the beginning and the end of this Yom Tov, which delivers a concrete lesson for our life — not only during the Yom Tov, but also throughout the year.

For such is the goal. All the brachos* and lights revealed during the chagim and celebrations must be preserved for each day of the year. This is particularly true for those[7] obtained during the Yom Tov of Pesach.

The laws and customs of the Yom Tov introduce, from its very beginning, from nightfall, the Seder, whose beginning and essential point is the injunction: "And you shall tell your son." Various modifications and new practices are therefore adopted in order to arouse the interest of the children. Moreover, this is done not only for the chacham*, for there is indeed "a chacham, a rasha*, a tam*, and one who does not know how to ask." And all must be gathered for the Pesach Seder. The father therefore teaches according to the means and the understanding of his son.

The conclusion of Pesach commemorates a nes* that took place on this day, when HaKadosh Baruch Hu* split the sea for us. Then each Jew pointed with his finger and said: "This is my Hashem, and I will glorify Him." Now, the boys and girls who had been born and grown up during the bitter galus* "recognized Hashem first."

Thus the conclusion of the Yom Tov is connected to its beginning.

We must employ all our koach* and all our zeal to find means and ways of acting that will permit us to win over the young generation, even if this entails modifying its nature and its habit. All the children of Yisrael — chacham, rasha, tam, or one who does not know how to ask — must draw close to Torah and mitzvos. Then we shall have the certainty of going, with our young and our old, to meet the geulah*, with our sons and our daughters.

Our generation was born and grew up during this bitter galus. It has known persecutions and pogroms. Its survivors, particularly the children whom Hashem has granted, whom He has left to us as symbols and signs — for the Torah will be perpetuated through them[8] — are also threatened, since a chinuch* is being imposed upon them which presents evil as good and good as evil[9], darkness as light and light as darkness, sweetness as bitterness and bitterness as sweetness, in order to turn them away from the Toras Hashem.

But HaKadosh Baruch Hu will save them and save us from their hands, and this generation will have the zechus*, very speedily and in our days, through Moshiach Tzidkeinu*, to be that of the geulah, which will be the true geulah promised by our holy nevi'im* — not by force and might, but by the spirit of Hashem. Then each man and each woman will recognize, point with the finger and say[10]:

"Behold, this is our Hashem, in Whom we have placed our hope and Who has saved us. This is Hashem, in Whom we have had emunah. We shall rejoice and be glad in the salvation that He grants."

With my brachah* for a kosher and joyous Yom Tov of Pesach,

M. Schneerson,
