Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1475 — Chinuch

By the grace of Hashem,

I greet and bless you,

I would like to know whether you take part in the activities of the Orthodox world in your city, particularly in the area of chinuch*, which is timely in the present period between Purim and Pesach. For Mordechai, who was the greatest of his generation in Torah knowledge, in yiras Shamayim*, and in wisdom, succeeded in annulling the decree precisely by teaching Torah to children, as our Sages relate[1].

And one finds this idea also at Pesach, the Yom Tov which begins with the Seder, during which various stratagems are employed to arouse the attention of the children and prevent them from sleeping, to preserve them from physical sleep and, all the more so, from moral sleep. Now, the Seder begins with the questions posed by the children.

So too with the conclusion of the Yom Tov of Pesach, commemorating the splitting of the Yam Suf, as the Midrash Shemos Rabbah emphasizes. Then, those children, who had been born in Mitzrayim and had grown up there, "recognized Hashem first."[2]

It follows from all this that the geulah*, physical and moral, of Yisrael depends upon the chinuch of the young generation. Each Jew, even one as great as Mordechai — since Esther Rabbah says that "Mordechai in his generation was as Moshe in his"[3] — must therefore participate in this chinuch.

May Hashem grant each of us to illuminate the portion of the world entrusted to him. It is in this way that one will hasten and bring about the true and complete geulah of all Yisrael, as Tanya perek 37 explains[4].

... אתענין לדעת אם לוקח חלק בחיים החרדים דעירו ובפרט בנוגע להחינוך אשר הוא ג"כ מענינא דיומא בימים שבין פורים לחג הפסח, אשר הגזירה דפורים נתבטלה עי"ז שמרדי הגדול בדורו הן בתורה והן ביראת שמים ובחכמה, למד בעצמו עם תשב"ר כמסופר בדברי רז"ל, ונקודה זו היא ג"כ בחגה"פ אשר התחלתו בסדר, הנה עושים כמה תחבולות להמשיך לב התינוקות ובפרט שלא יישנו (שינה בגשמיות וכ"ש מבחינת שינה רוחנית) ומתחיל הסדר בשאלת תינוקות, וכן הוא גם ביום ימי חגה"פ ענינים קרי"ס מספור ג"כ בשמו"ר, שהם היינו התינוקות שנולדו ונתגדלו במצרים הכירוהו תחלה (להקב"ה) אשר המורם מזה הוא, שגאולתן של ישראל הן בגשמיות והן ברוחניות תלוי' בחינוך דור הצעיר, ועל כאו"א משיראל אפילו שיהי' גדול כמרדכי שעליו ארז"ל במדרש אסתר רבה, שמרדכי בדורו כמשה בדורו, מחויב בעצמו לקחת חלק בחינוך זה.

והשי"ת יזכנו את כאו"א מאתנו להאיר את חלקו בעולם אשר עי"ז מקדימים ומביאים את הגאולה השלימה ואמיתית של כלל ישראל, וכמבואר בתניא פל"ז.
