Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1473 — Tzedakah

To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,

HaRav Naftali HaKohen[1],

I greet and bless you,

I have been informed of your question or of your surprise. Indeed, Mr. Rabinovitch told you that, while at my home, he had indicated to me that he was giving a certain amount for tzedakah*. I then asked him to convey it to a specific cause, intended to assist the financing of marriages. Now, you are astonished that I stipulated to him the destination of these funds.

Our Sages explain it in Maseches Chullin 94a, by forbidding certain practices that could lead to confusion. The poskim* speak of it as well, at the references mentioned by the Ein Mishpat Ner Mitzvah[2]. In the present case, as I was able to perceive, Mr. Rabinovitch thought that his contribution would be used otherwise. According to halachah, I was therefore obligated to tell him to which tzedakah cause it would be allocated.

I would like to know whether you take part in the communal activities of your city, particularly in the area of chinuch*.

I enclose for you a chassidic maamar* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, that has just appeared.

מסרו לי שאלתו (או תמיהתו) במה ששמע ממר ראבינאוויטש שי' אשר בביקורו אצלי ואמר שנותן איזה סכום, אמרתי לו שאכניס את המעות לקופת צדקה מסויימה (הכנסת 9כל ותמה למה הי' זה לי לומר לו מה אעשה בהמעות.

והוא מובן ע"פ מרז"ל (חולין צ"ד ע"א) שאסרו כמה דברים מפני דמ[ט]עהו, ונזכר ג"כ בפוסקים כמסומן בעין משפט נר מצוה, וכיון שראיתי במר רבינוביץ שחושב אשר מעות אלו ילכו לתכלית אחרת, הנה מחוייב הייתי עפ"י דין להודיע שיכנסו לקופה של צדקה מסויימת.

אתענין לדעת אם כת"ר לוקח חלק בעסקנות צבורית בעירו ובפרט בעיני החינוך.
