Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1467 — Shidduchim

By the grace of Hashem,

I bless and greet you,

I learned with satisfaction that two shidduchim* are being proposed to you. I hope that you will take an interest in them and choose the one that suits you best.

It is doubtless unnecessary to emphasize that, while meticulous reflection is needed before agreeing to marry, one must also know that complete knowledge of a person cannot be obtained at once. One must therefore rely upon Hashem, Who guides the great world, but also the small world that each person constitutes. Without doubt, He will enable one to choose what is best.

One must therefore strengthen one's hiskashrus* to Hashem, by advancing on the way of Torah and mitzvos. But Hashem also asks that one forge, in every situation, a kli*, by following the ways of nature. One must therefore take a personal interest in everything that must be accomplished, and this is true also for marriage.

Nevertheless, one must not go to the other extreme and accept the first match that presents itself. But one must also not be too difficult.

I hope that your state of health is better and that you will soon convey to me good news. You will tell me that you have found the one destined for you, in order to build a Jewish home, a happy home in every domain.
