Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1463 — Grief & Loss

By the grace of Hashem,

20 Adar 5712,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

HaRav Shlomo Yosef[1],

I learned with pain of the misfortune that has occurred and the loss of your wife, the Rebbetzin. May Hashem comfort you among the other mourners of Tziyon and Yerushalayim[2].

May Hashem grant that you no longer encounter suffering and pain, that you henceforth know only good and happiness, peace of mind and brain, hatzlachah* in your work, in your study of Torah and in your communal responsibilities.

With my brachah*,

N.B.: I have heard chassidim* recount that, upon the passing of his wife, the Rebbetzin, the Tzemach Tzedek[3] was particularly bitter.

He cited several times the passage of the Zohar, vol. 3, page 5a, which speaks of "a king without a queen." Then one of his sons said to him: "I myself heard you cite the explanation of our Sages in Maseches Kiddushin 30b, according to which the verse 'Live your life with this woman' alludes to Torah." The Tzemach Tzedek replied to him: "You have comforted me, my son, you have comforted me."

ויה"ר מהשי"ת אשר לא ידע עוד מכל צער ועגמ"נ, ואך טוב וחסד' ישכון באהלו תמיד, מנוחת הלב ומנוחת המוח והצלחה בעבודתו, בתורה ובצ"צ וכו'.

שמעתי חסידים מספרים: כאשר נפטרה הרבנית, זוגתו של אדמו"ר הצ"צ, הי' במרירות גדולה, כמה פעמים הביא בדבורו מאמר הזהר הק' (ח"ג ה, א) מלכא בלא מטרוניתא כו' וכיו"ב, עד שאחד מבניו א"ל: בעצמי שמעתי ממך מרז"ל (קדושין ל, ב) וראה חיים עם אשר זו תורה, ויענה הצ"צ: נחמתני בני נחמתני.
