Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1430 — Chinuch
Volume 5 · Letter 210
By the grace of Hashem,
Motzaei Shabbos 21 Shevat 5712,
Brooklyn,
To the Lubavitch Young Women's Association,
may Hashem grant them long life,
I bless and greet you,
I received your letter with pleasure, in which you describe your accomplishments in their broad outlines. You also inform me that you are organizing a Melaveh Malkah* on Motzaei this Shabbos Parshas Yisro.
In response to your letter, I wish to express my wishes and brachah that your activity be commensurate with the hopes that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, placed in your organization. For the words of tzaddikim* are eternal[1].
The request and wish of a tzaddik are not merely an ordinary request, but also a special koach* granted to the recipients of that request, to fulfill it in the best possible way. Furthermore, the wishes of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, have this distinctive quality, that they are expressed in such a way that each person can carry them out with goodness and simchah*.
This association was founded while the Rebbe was still in this world. Without doubt, he protects it even now, as well as each of its members in particular. All those who have the zechus* of belonging to it will therefore mobilize their koach to accomplish what he expects of them and, in this way, give him pleasure in the full sense of the word. It is in this manner that one can elicit and integrate brachah and hatzlachah* into the personal concerns of each one.
Of course, your role is not limited, as you state in your letter, to collecting funds for the Lubavitch institutions. As important as this activity is, it is not sufficient. For the atmosphere of your homes, as well as the influence your home exerts upon its surroundings, depends in large measure upon you.
You must illustrate what a Lubavitch woman ought to be, the manner in which she conducts her home, so that one can say with pride: "See those whom I have raised, see what a true chassidishe* woman is, whose example must be emulated"[2].
In the parshah we read this Shabbos morning, it is said: "So shall you say to the house of Yaakov and tell to the children of Yisrael"[3]. The Midrash relates what Hashem then said to Moshe Rabbeinu*: "You shall speak first to the house of Yaakov, that is, to the women, and only afterward to the children of Yisrael, the men"[4].
It is in this way, then, that the Torah can be perpetuated within the Jewish people. And the same is true of the ways of Chassidus and chassidic conduct. You must apply the words of the verse: "So shall you say to the house of Yaakov" by directing your home as is fitting, and by exerting a positive influence upon the homes of your good friends and acquaintances.
With my brachah for hatzlachah in your work,
