Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1423 — Health

Volume 5 · Letter 203

By the grace of Hashem,
15 Shevat 5712,
Brooklyn,

Greetings and brachos*,

I duly received your letter of the eve of the second hilula* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe[1]. I begin by presenting my apologies, for it seems that you did not interpret my initiative of sending you a check in the sense in which I meant it[2].

Indeed, I am well aware that this sum is modest[3]. But you must also take into account the possibilities of our gemach*. In fact, my approach was based on a story that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, related in the name of the Tzemach Tzedek, and from which he made a rule of conduct that he himself adopted. When one of those bound to him was in difficulty, he would address to him a very small sum.

One can give, on this subject, the following explanation. The Tzemach Tzedek compared his gemach to that of which Chazal* speak in Maseches Bava Basra 9b: "He who receives a coin from Iyov is blessed." And it is indeed a very small coin. Nevertheless, it comes from the gemach of an upright and righteous man. It therefore brings considerable success.

The gemach in my possession contains what my father-in-law, the Rebbe, left, and I am his chassid*. I am therefore convinced that a simple coin from this gemach can confer success upon the matter in which it is invested.

Nevertheless, I know that you were profoundly devoted to my father-in-law, the Rebbe. You were his friend, more than his chassid. Consequently, I made out this check for an amount that is practically the maximum of what it is possible for me to address to you presently, taking into account the means of the gemach.

It follows from what has just been said that:

A) I hope you will not bear me a grudge,

B) it is a pity that you did not use the check. I repeat to you once more that this amount would have brought you success and brachah*. In any case, my proposal remains valid. Perhaps I am being punished for having transgressed the saying of the Alter Rebbe that I cited to you in my previous letter[4].

I am a little surprised that you do not speak at all of the state of health of your wife and of yours. I conclude by addressing my warmest wishes to you and to your wife, in order to fill all the lacks, in the best way and the most rapidly, not only by satisfying your needs, but even beyond that. The Torah makes a distinction[5], indeed, between the strict satisfaction of needs — which must be distinguished from wealth — and wealth properly so called.

With my brachah,

P.S.: I am enclosing the words said on the occasion of the fifth light of Chanukah. There it is also a question of "the one who receives a coin[6]."

Notes
(1) 10 Shevat.
(2) See, on this subject, letter no. 1407. This refers to assistance sent by the Rebbe to the recipient of this letter.
(3) Literally "that it is a 'large' sum," the quotation marks of the word "large" being added by the Rebbe.
(4) The Rebbe said: "The Alter Rebbe teaches that there are three things one cannot impose, a piece of advice, a good shidduch*, and an act of chesed*. You will excuse me for going beyond this saying."
(5) Regarding this mitzvah* of chesed.
(6) Of Iyov.
