Greetings and brachos*,

I thank you for having announced to me a piece of good news — the fact that the operation of Mrs. ... went well. May Hashem grant that you may always transmit good news to me, that you may be, in the expression of Chazal* in Maseches Kiddushin 40a, "good for Heaven and good for the creatures."

In avodas haBorei*, one is "good for Heaven" through one's nefesh elokis*, and "good for the creatures" through one's body and one's nefesh habahamis*. Such is the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov in his commentary on the verse "when you see the donkey of your enemy crouching under its burden," which is reproduced in HaYom Yom on p. 23[1].

I would like to have details about your study of Torah. Doubtless you also learn what Chazal call, in Maseches Shabbos 31a, "a measure of salty earth"[2]. This guards and preserves the wheat, to which Torah is precisely compared[3].

With my brachah for a study of Torah permeated with yiras Shamayim*,

(1) Underscoring the necessity of elevating matter and not breaking it.
(2) Which is mixed with the wheat to prevent it from spoiling. Likewise, Chassidus preserves the knowledge of Torah as a whole.
