Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1415 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 5 · Letter 195
By the grace of Hashem,
15 Shevat 5712,
Brooklyn,
To the rav*, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Mordechai HaKohen[1],
Greetings and brachos*,
I reply to your letter, in which you inform me of your situation. There is being organized in your city a Brotherhood Week, and you have been proposed, as the rav of the community, to participate in it and to deliver a discourse there, on the same footing as the priest. Moreover, this gathering is organized in a hall that is in the same building as their place of worship. You ask me my opinion on this question.
It is clear that such a practice is forbidden by halachah*. It is also to be proscribed because of what could be concluded by people who would see you there and would retain only the friendly relationship of which they would be witnesses between the Orthodox rav and the priest.
You ask me how to explain all this to the members of your community. There are different ways of doing so, and I will set forth one for you, which you can adapt to your situation.
The countries in which we find ourselves are proud of their freedom, permitting each one to adopt of his own free will his convictions and his faith. Consequently, one must set aside any practice that could lead to confusion or constraint in the religious domain. For it is in this matter that pressures are most frequent, in the various forms they may take.
The verse establishes that Yisrael is "the smallest among the nations," by its number as by its material means. Despite this, throughout the entire duration of galus*, Yidden* have not made the slightest concession in everything that touches their faith. They have even given their lives for it.
Indeed, when it concerns faith, it is not easy to determine what is grave and what is not. Concretely, the most banal practice, once it calls into question the convictions, can lead to abjuring, chas veshalom*.
One can give, on this subject, the following illustration. An animal that had a large opening in its foot, or even that was amputated of this limb, would remain kosher[2], whereas a hole the size of a needle's point on the membrane covering the brain would render it tereifah*.
And it is the same for man, physically and morally. He must therefore be particularly careful in everything that touches his faith. His conduct must not lend itself to confusion before others, not even women and children. Now, the latter, seeing the Orthodox rav deliver a discourse just after the Christian priest, would deduce that there exist common points among the religions, that one can therefore take precedence over the other, especially if all this takes place in a building that is the property of the dominant religion in this country.
Now, if a single spectator is misled in this way, even if it is a child, that justifies that everything be cancelled, as Midrash Devarim Rabbah, chapter 7, paragraph 8, says, reporting the affirmation of Hashem at matan Torah*, according to which He would not have given it if a single Yid, among the six hundred thousand, were then missing. And Chazal* specify no restriction about this Yid. He could therefore have been the lowest, spiritually the most humble. Now, on his account, the entire people of Yisrael, including Moshe Rabbeinu*, would not have received the Torah.
This refusal must not be interpreted as a lack of respect toward the priest, as I underscored at the beginning of my letter. Indeed, the public authorities are proud to proclaim that, in this country, each is free to conduct himself according to his faith and his convictions.
As you ask me, I am addressing this letter to you in express, and I will therefore reply to your other questions on a future occasion, with Hashem's help.
With my brachah* of leading your community toward yiras Shamayim*,
