Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1414 — Chinuch

Volume 5 · Letter 194 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,
15 Shevat 5712,
Brooklyn,

To the great rav*, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem
and is devoted to communal needs,
Rav Efraim Eliezer HaKohen[1],

Greetings and brachos*,

I received with pleasure your two letters of 7 Shevat and Thursday of Parshas Beshalach. It is a pity that you were not present at the chassidishe* farbrengen* of the second hilula* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe[2]. Indeed, it is said that everything, including what concerns a Sefer Torah*, depends on mazel*[3].

Two statements of Chazal* can be cited on this subject. In Maseches Kiddushin 33b and Maseches Makkos 22b, they ask which has precedence, the Sefer Torah or the talmid chacham*. You will consult Rabbeinu Nissim at the first reference, and the Maharsha at the second. Furthermore, they also affirm at the beginning of Midrash Bereishis Rabbah that "the thought of Yisrael preceded all else," including that of the Torah, since it is said in the latter, "speak to the Bnei Yisrael."

I read with satisfaction, in your second letter, that you were finally able to repair what needed to be, regarding kosher meat. May Hashem grant that you may soon do the same regarding chinuch*[4].

My father-in-law, the Rebbe, underscored[5] that in the United States, one demands a hashgachah on what one puts in the pot and one verifies its quality, whereas, by contrast, what one places in the head escapes all control. Whoever wishes to defines himself as a teacher who has yiras Shamayim*, an educator, a pedagogue.

On this subject, you know to what extent the sichas chullin* of talmidei chachamim*[6] is important. In our case, the Talmud itself employs this term "pot" to designate the head, and this can also be linked to the verse "Your Torah is in my innards," as chapter 5 of Tanya* says.

Obviously, I mentioned your name, as well as that of the members of your family, as you asked me, near the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, on the day of the hilula[2]. May Hashem grant that all the tefillos* and all the requests be fulfilled, in the merit of the tzaddik* who possesses the highest elevation. Indeed, Yosef[7], who was a tzaddik of high elevation, assured the sustenance of the entire country.

With my brachah*,

(1) Rav E. E. Yalles, chief rabbi of Philadelphia. See, on his subject, letter no. 1317.
(2) 10 Shevat.
(3) In the text, "mazel." One must conclude from this that mazel was not favorable in this instance.
(4) In Philadelphia. See, on this subject, letters no. 1285 and 1286.
(5) See, on this subject, letter no. 958.
(6) Which is not, properly speaking, their teaching of Torah.
(7) The Frierdiker Rebbe was also called Yosef. See letter no. 1412.
