Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1407 — Tzedakah

Greetings and brachos*,

You surely received in due time my previous letter[1]. I am worried and concerned not to have had news from you since then. I hope that you are well, and I thank you in advance for confirming this to me by writing.

I permit myself to enclose for you a check for two hundred and fifty shekels, emanating from our gemach*. You will reimburse them when Hashem grants you largesse. I hope that this will be very soon, much sooner than you think.

The Alter Rebbe teaches[2] that there are three things one cannot impose: a piece of advice, a good shidduch*, and an act of chesed*[3]. You will excuse me for going beyond this saying.

This reminds me of an episode my Gemara teacher[4] related to me, when I saw him on a day of Tisha B'Av while he was studying a passage of the Gemara[5]. I then expressed my astonishment: "Is it not written in the Shulchan Aruch* that it is forbidden to study Torah on Tisha B'Av?"

He answered me that, in his view, he would be punished in any event when he reached olam haba*. He therefore wished that this punishment be given to him precisely for having studied Torah on the 9th of Av[6].

On the occasion of the hilula* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe[7], I am enclosing the suggestions I formulated[8]. May Hashem grant that there soon be fulfilled the promise according to which "those who repose under the earth will awaken and rejoice." He will then be among them.

מכתבי הקודם בטח נתקבל בעתו, ודואג ומצטער אני על אשר מאז לא הגיעתני כל ידיעה ממנו. ואקוה שהכל אתו שלום, ובכל אופן ת"ח מראש אם יכתוב לי עד"ז בפירוש.

ארשה לי לצרף בזה המחאה על סך ר"ן שקלים מקרן הגמ"ח שלנו, אשר ישלם לכשירחיב השי"ת גבולו, ותקותי אשר יהי' זה בקרוב, אסך פריער ווי מ'רעכנט.

תקותי ג"כ אשר לא יקפיד על עברי על הפתגם שאומרים בשם רבינו הזקן, אז מיט דריי זאכן דארף מען זיך ניט אנשלאגן, והם עצה, שידוך וגמ"ח; והוא על דרך ששמעתי מהמלמד שלמד אתי גמרא, כאשר מצאתיו לומד תשעה באב סוגיא גמרא, ועל תמיהתי, הלא איתא בשו"ע שת"ב אסור בת"ת, ענה לי, אשר לפי השערתו וועט מען סיי ווי סיי שמייסן בעולם האמת, טא זאל כאטש זיין פאר לערנען אום ת"ב.
