Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1392 — Health
Volume 5 · Letter 172
By the grace of Hashem,
2 Shevat 5712,
Brooklyn,
To the rav*, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Yoel[1],
Greetings and brachos*,
I received with pleasure your letter of the day of the hilula* of the Alter Rebbe[2], and I was glad to read that you are satisfied and that all is well.
You doubtless know the following commentary of the Alter Rebbe, reproduced in chapter 3 of the Kuntres HaChassidus[3]:
"Maskil le'Eisan ha'Ezrachi[4]: Eisan denotes the etzem* of the neshamah*, bound to the Etzem of Hashem and which is a portion of It. It is said: 'The neshamah You have placed within me is pure. You have created it, formed it, and breathed it in.' One traces here the path of the four spiritual worlds.
The Midrash mentions five parts of the neshamah — Nefesh[5], Ruach[6], Neshamah[7], Chayah[8], and Yechidah[9]. The Zohar makes them four levels: Nefesh, Ruach, Neshamah, and Neshamah of the Neshamah, which correspond to the four letters of the Tetragrammaton.
Eisan reveals the neshamah in all its strength and permits mesirus nefesh*. This term is of the same etymology as Yashan*, that which is so, is not new. It corresponds to the Name AB[10], which is also not a new fact. The Names SAG[11] and MaH[12], by contrast, evoke the systems of Tohu*[13] and Tikun*[14], representing both new facts.
The Name AB transcends Tohu and Tikun. It is therefore not a new fact. It is bound to the middah* of Chochmah*, that of intellectual discovery, and, more precisely, to its inner aspect. Indeed, a relationship exists between this last and the inner dimension of Atik*[15], a term that also signifies 'ancient' and reveals the Etzem of Hashem.
Such is the meaning of the expression: 'The neshamah You have placed within me is pure,' which alludes to this neshamah as it is found in the world of Atzilus*[16], a drawing forth of a light issuing from the Etzem, which is therefore not a new fact, but only a revelation of that which is hidden.
Maskil denotes the source bringing the intellect into evidence. Now, this Maskil belongs to Eisan, so that only Eisan possesses a Maskil. By this force of the intellect, he is the Ezrachi, and he illuminates[17] the kochos* and the senses."
Commenting on the verse "yiras Hashem* is life," various texts of Chassidus underscore that by strengthening one's yiras Shamayim*, one strengthens one's life and one's health, including in the physical sense. How much more is this the case for Eisan, which marks all the power of the neshamah. When this level is revealed, one can therefore make mesirus nefesh and devote oneself to Torah and mitzvos*. Life and health are thereby increased.
May Hashem grant you a long and pleasant life, may He illumine the part of the world entrusted to you with "the candle (which) is a mitzvah and the Torah (which) is light," and with the luminary of the Torah, which is Chassidus.
You tell me that, in your city, you can speak to no one[18]. You know what the Tzemach Tzedek answered Rabbi Hillel of Paritch: "The neshamos understand"[19]. Moreover, our rebbeim* have presently revealed to us the deepest concepts of Chassidus, including in our mother tongue[20], so that all may understand them. These are therefore accessible even to the simplest Yidden*, and it is enough to have the necessary concentration.
I conclude as I began, in wishing you long life and good years, in the literal sense but also more profoundly, in filling them with the true good which is Torah and mitzvos, permeated by the inner dimension of Torah and illumined by it.
P.S.: You ask, in your letter, about the interpretation Chassidus gives of the following expression of Chazal*: "Hashem desired to have a dwelling here below." Chassidus underscores, indeed, that this desire transcends reason. You object that it must be, for Him, an immense pleasure. The conduct of man permits establishing it. He conceives the greatest pleasure in revealing his wisdom. And, "more than the calf...[21]."
Obviously, nothing of the kind can be said about Hashem. For if the wise man feels pleasure in transmitting his knowledge to others, one cannot say the same of Hashem, with respect to Whom no one is "other." Furthermore, the Will of Hashem bears on the lower aspects of the chain of worlds. Now, one cannot understand why Hashem wills to dwell precisely here below, as the commentary of the chassidic maamar* "the yom tov of Rosh Hashanah" 5666[22] says, at its beginning.
The most essential and the most general point, on this subject, is the following. It is, first of all, impossible to understand why Hashem desired the chain of worlds. For, beforehand, the intellect and comprehension did not yet exist, and they were created afterward.
Before the creation of the worlds, "there was only Hashem and His Name." This Name corresponds to the Divine Will to dwell here below. It is therefore impossible to state a logical reason, since this did not yet exist. This should be enough for you to understand.
