Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1391 — Chinuch
Volume 5 · Letter 171
By the grace of Hashem,
2 Shevat 5712,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and brachos*,
You no doubt know that your brother visited me. To follow up on our conversation, I am sending you a copy of the letter I addressed to him. It would be good and judicious that your brother not know I sent it to you.
I am obliged to say that I am very surprised at your attitude. It seemed to me, indeed, that your brother could be positively influenced. One must therefore bring him much closer to Torah and mitzvos*. Now, he tells me, for example, that he is affiliated with a Temple of "Conservative" tendency[1], whereas, evidently, he does not know that such a practice is condemnable.
Do you think that Hashem brought you here only to take advantage of the wealth of the United States and no longer endure the vicissitudes of the regions from which you originate, then the discomfort you knew in France? You reside in the same city as your brother, and Hashem caused you to know the luminary of the Torah in general and Chassidus* in particular. Do you not feel the responsibility that falls upon you?
My father-in-law, the Rebbe, citing his father, the Rebbe Rashab[2], said: "Just as one must put on tefillin* each day, so too one must, in the same way, take an interest in the chinuch* of the members of his family" — and, in your case, that of your brother and his own. You have the duty and the sacred merit of bringing the heart of your brother and the members of his family closer to Torah and mitzvos, in every possible measure. Undoubtedly, if you devote yourself to this each day, in fitting terms and in a pleasant manner, you will know success.
Certainly, the "clever one"[3] could suggest to you that you need the financial support he brings you and that, consequently, he will not listen to you. That is in no way the case, and there is in this only an intervention of the yetzer hara*.
In fact, the lamdanim* of Torah and the spiritual guides must, very often, receive financial support from their talmidim*, and one must see in this a kindness of Hashem. You will consult, on this subject, the Raya Mehemna, cited by Iggeres HaKodesh, in chapter 26: "The lamdanim, comparable to Shabbos and yamim tovim*, possess only what is prepared for them during the weekdays."
You will also consult the Sefer HaMitzvos[4] of the Tzemach Tzedek, page 112b, which reports what the Alter Rebbe says about the conduct of the holy Rabbi Mendel Barrer, who would expound on Torah only when one gave him a coin. You will study this text precisely.
With my brachah* of success in all this and in thanking you in advance for the good news you will announce to me on the matter,
