To the great rav*, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem
and is devoted to communal needs,
Rav Yehuda Aryeh[1],

Greetings and brachos*,

I received with satisfaction your letter, by which you give me news of the chassid, Rav .... From your writing, it seems that his state of health has improved a little. I hope that, in your next correspondence, you will announce to me that his sight has strengthened, that he will be able, afterward, to write to me himself. Hashem, Who "heals all flesh and works wonders," will send him a speedy refuah*.

Chazal* say: "Who is wise? He who anticipates that which is to come." Chassidus* gives the following explanation. The wise man is the one who perceives, at every moment, in what manner the Creation was effected from nothingness.

The Alter Rebbe explains, in Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah[2], that Creation was not realized once and for all during the six days. In fact, the Word of Hashem leads it permanently into existence, from nothingness.

It is the same for every Yid*, whose physical life depends on his moral existence. He who feels that a limb of his body is weakened goes to a doctor. It is necessary, indeed, to follow the ways of nature, and the Torah authorizes this doctor to heal, which means that it also gives him the strength to do so.

Nevertheless, one must also concern oneself with the weakening of the spiritual limb, which in this case is that of vision. One must therefore perceive, at every moment, that the world is created from nothingness.

My purpose is not to make a maamar*, but to invite this rav to strengthen his study of Chassidus[3], beginning with that of Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah, which I cited above. I thank you for kindly transmitting all this to him, just as you committed yourself to give me an account of his state and you have indeed done so. You will surely also accept the mission I am entrusting to you herewith. And you will help him put all this into practice, in the best way.

I am enclosing a copy of my letter[4], addressed to all, about the "yom tov of all yamim tovim," 19 Kislev, as well as the account of my words, before the talmidim* who came to see me on the occasion of the kindling of the fifth light of Chanukah, and the kuntres* on 19 Kislev[5]. I hope that all this will interest you.

With my brachah* that Hashem grant you the merit of announcing that a sick person is doing better and of informing me of the positive accomplishments you carry out in your city with the goal of bringing Yiddishe* hearts closer to their Father Who is in heaven,

P.S.: In 5688[6], when I was in Berlin, I visited your father[7] one Friday evening. He was then teaching Rambam to a few people. Among those present, there was also a student of the Rav of Kelm, but I do not remember his name.

בנועם קבלתי מכתבו, בו מודיע ע"ד מצב בריאותו של הרה"ח וכו' מוה"ר... שי', אשר כנראה ממכתבו הנה במקצת הוטבה בריאותו, ואקוה אשר במכתבו הבא יודיעני אשר כח הראי' שלו הולך וחזק, ובמשך הזמן יוכל לכתוב ג"כ בעצמו, והשי"ת הרופא כל בשר ומפליא לעשות ישלח לו רפואה בקרוב.

ידוע מרז"ל איזהו חכם הרואה את הנולד, ופירוש תורת החסידות בזה הרואה את הולדת הבריאה מאין ליש שרואה זה בכל עת ובכל רגע, וכמבואר בשער היחוד והאמונה לאדמו"ר הזקן, אשר אין הבריאה פעולה חד-זמנית בששת ימי בראשית, אלא שדבר ה' מהווה את כל הבריאה בכל רגע מאין ליש, וכן הוא שבכל איש הישראלי, בריאות הגשמית תלוי בבריאותו ברוחניות, והנה כשמרגיש חולשה באבר גשמי הרי הולך לרופא, לפי שצריכים להתנהג בדרך הטבע שהתורה נתנה רשות (שפירושו ג"כ כח) לרופא לרפאות, אבל ג"כ צל"ע בחולשה דאבר הרוחני, ובנדון דידן בענין הראי' את הנולד מאין ליש בכל רגע. ולא לדרשא קאתינא, אלא לעורר את...שי' להתחזק בלימוד תורת החסידות, ובתור התחלה בלימוד שער היחוד והאמונה הנ"ל. ות"ח לכת"ר על טרחתו במסירת כל הנ"ל ל... שי' וכמו שלקח על עצמו והי' שליח לכתוב לי ע"ד מצבו, הנה בטח יקבל על עצמו גם שליחותי האמורה במכתבי זה, וגם יסייע ביד הנ"ל להביא את זה בפועל טוב.

מוסג"פ העתק מכ' הכללי בקשר עם חג החגים הוא י"ט כסלו העבר, ורשימת דברים מה שאמרתי להתלמידים שיחיו בהכנסם אלי בנר החמישי דחנוכה, וכן החוברת ע"ד י"ט כסלו, אשר תקותי שיעניין כ"ז את כת"ר שי'.

בברכה שיזכהו השי"ת לבשר טובות ע"ד הטבת מצב החולה, ולבשר ג"כ מפעולותיו הוא בעירו לקרב את לבם של ישראל לאביהם שבשמים.

נ"ב: בשנת תרפ"ח בהיותי בברלין בקרתי פעם אחת בליל ש"ק בבית אביו זצ"ל ודכירנא שלמד אז אביו לפני ב"ב רמב"ם, ובין הנוכחים הי' ג"כ אחד מתלמידי הקעלמער, אף שאיני זוכר את שמו.
