Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1384 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 5 · Letter 164 · To: final

By the grace of Hashem,
1 Shevat 5712,
Brooklyn,

Greetings and brachos*,

I read with pleasure your letter of Thursday of Parshas Vayigash and the previous one, in which you describe to me the chassidishe* farbrengen* of the "yom tov of all yamim tovim," 19 Kislev, and your activity in your city.

A) I learned with satisfaction that the rav* of that city was also present, that he commented on the event[1]. You tell me that at the end of this farbrengen, someone tried to sow disturbance. You must not be affected by it; at the next farbrengens, you will surely erase the trace of what happened. In the end, he too will come to your help.

If you think it would be useful that I write to him, let me know what his level of Torah knowledge is and what language he speaks — Hebrew, Yiddish, or English. Without taking it as a vow, I will write to him.

B) I thank you for having enclosed the photograph of the young men who are your talmidim*[2]. It is a pity that you did not indicate, on a sheet or on the back of this photograph, their name and that of their mother. You will surely do so in the future.

C) You tell me that you cannot determine whether you should present the mitzvos* to them by appealing to their kabbalas ol*, or whether it is necessary to give them a reasoned approach.

In fact, the mitzvos were entrusted to men by Hashem. It results that their wisdom undergoes no limit. Nevertheless, they remain accessible, in a certain way, to the intellect. Thus, our seforim* can explain the reason for the mitzvos.

It is, however, the Wisdom and the Will of HaKadosh Baruch Hu*. One can therefore go deeply into the reason for these mitzvos, into their meaning. One will never grasp them in an exhaustive manner, for that which is finite cannot perceive the infinite. At most, one can hope to have a tiny perspective of it.

Furthermore, Hashem gave the mitzvos for the good of the man whom He created. He is therefore in a position to determine what is good for him. Now, no one can say that he will not eat as long as he has not grasped what the contribution of food and drink is; no person stricken with migraine will refuse to take a medication as long as he does not understand what it is for. For it is, on the contrary, the very fact of treating oneself, of eating or drinking, that strengthens the intellect and perception, and permits, in the end, understanding the contribution of food, of drink, or of the medication.

And it is the same for the mitzvos. It is certain that a small dimension of them can be perceived by the intellect. But that is by no means a necessary condition for fulfilling them and for studying Torah, chas veshalom*. On the contrary, Torah and mitzvos are the prior stage permitting the intellect to grasp them.

All this could be developed, but the message must be adapted to the level of your talmidim. I rely on your judgment to make this adaptation.

I am enclosing a few texts, edited in English, which will permit you to develop this idea. May Hashem grant you success in your sacred mission and in your personal concerns, as well as good health for your wife and your daughter.

With my brachah* of success in your communal function and in your personal occupations,

P.S.: You complain about not seeing the fruit of your efforts. And when you do obtain a result, you say it is not lasting. It is a pity that you lose time complaining, for it is clear that this will be of no use. Moreover, this approach will even be harmful, and it will provoke discouragement and, eventually, a weakening of your health.

In fact, this complaint has no place, and you will consult the end of chapter 13 of Tanya*: "Compared to the level of the tzaddikim*...[3], for it disappears...[4]. Despite this, ...[5] for their nefesh elokis* can still arouse it at any moment...[6]. It always remains identical...[7] until the end of all levels."

The Tanya also says, in chapter 25: "The bond created in this way is unchangeable Above." It is unnecessary to say more. You know the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe: "Abandon sighs and calculations. Strengthen yourself in avodas Hashem*."

In the end, Hashem will grant you success and your efforts are crowned with success. And the reward is according to the effort.

Notes
(1) 19 Kislev.
(2) Whom the recipient of this letter is trying to draw close to Yiddishkeit.
(3) The love of Hashem of the beinonim*, the intermediate men, is not true love.
(4) After tefillah, whereas that which is true is unchangeable.
(5) For the beinonim, it is indeed a real love of Hashem, which they feel during tefillah.
(6) By strengthening himself as appropriate, each day, during tefillah. For truth undergoes no modification.
(7) From one end to the other, constitutes a "limitless inheritance," without measure, transcending all limit.
