Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1376 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 5 · Letter 156 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,
27 Teves 5712,
Brooklyn,

To the great rav*, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Ephraim Eliezer HaKohen[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of 22 Teves. As you asked of me, I mentioned your name at the chassidishe* farbrengen* of 24 Teves, the date of the hilula* of our great master[2].

In accordance with your request, you have also been inscribed among the participants in the Siyum HaShas*[3].

You ask me which masechta* I myself chose in this division. Without making it a vow, I will study Maseches Sukkah and Maseches Sanhedrin.

In order not to send paper[4], I am reproducing for you a passage[5] of what was said at this farbrengen, according to the account of the Maggid of Mezeritch, when the Alter Rebbe came to see him for the first time. Then the Maggid charged his son, "the Malach," with teaching Chassidus* to the Alter Rebbe, and the latter with teaching nigleh* to his son.

They began their study: "Mei'eimasai — from when[6]." The Alter Rebbe explained the meaning of this passage, but the Malach said that it had to be brought close to eimah, fear, awe. He showed the relation between the beginning and the end of the Talmud. For in the division that is made here, the six orders of the Mishnah are also distributed. But the conclusion bears on Maseches Niddah[7], which is indeed linked to that one[8].

The conclusion of the Mishnah is as follows: "HaKadosh Baruch Hu* found no other vessel containing brachah* for Yisroel than peace," and the union of Bnei Yisroel*. As chapter 32 of the Tanya explains, "Bless us our Father" is possible when we are "all as one."

True unity between men in general, and between Yidden* in particular, is not possible when it is self-interested. In such a case, one does not really attach oneself to the other. One only seeks one's own interest.

Chapter 32 explains what true unity is. It says that all neshamos* are united by their source in the One Hashem. Chassidus specifies that the source of the neshamos is higher than that of Torah and mitzvos*.

Chazal* explain at the beginning of Midrash Bereishis Rabba that "the thought of Yisroel preceded all other things," including Torah, as it is said: "Speak to the Bnei Yisroel"[9]. It is thus that the Talmud begins, by evoking Shema Yisroel, and that it concludes by defining peace as a vessel containing brachah.

Peace is obtained when one says Shema Yisroel, when one thinks that Hashem is One. But it must be said with truth, with awe — Mei'eimasai — and submission, rather than in a logical and reasoned manner, not even with the rationality of holiness.

For someone like yourself, this brief exposition will suffice.

With my brachah for success in your sacred mission,

M. Schneerson,

(1) Rav E. E. Yalles of Philadelphia. See letter no. 1317.
(2) The Alter Rebbe. A collection for tzedakah is organized on this occasion.
(3) By studying one of its masechtos. This Siyum HaShas is celebrated each 24 Teves.
(4) Without evoking words of Torah.
(5) See also letter no. 1408.
(6) May one recite the Shema of the evening? Such is how Maseches Berachos, the first of the Talmud, begins.
(7) The last of the Talmud.
(8) To the first masechta, that of Berachos.
(9) In the Torah — which surely means that the Yidden preexist it.
