Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1374 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 5 · Letter 154

By the grace of Hashem,
27 Teves 5712,
Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

In reply to your letter, in which you evoke these thoughts that trouble you. You must forget them completely. You must learn by heart several passages of Torah that you will have prepared[1]. No doubt you also know by heart chapters of Tanya and chassidic maamarim*.

You know the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, which he transmits in the name of several of our rebbeim*. When people complained before them of having bad thoughts, they would reply: "One can rush into what is empty." Consequently, when the brain is filled with the words of Torah and tefillah* that one knows by heart, these remain engraved in the mind, even when one is not thinking of them, as Likkutei Torah explains in the maamar* "You shall honor the elder."

Thus, when it is not an empty place[2], it is harder for them[3] to enter. If sometimes they do enter all the same, it is easier to drive them out.

With my brachah* to have success and to study Torah with yiras Shamayim*,

Notes
(1) To concentrate on them when bad thoughts present themselves.
(2) The brain.
(3) The bad thoughts.
