Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1369 — Prayer
Volume 5 · Letter 149
By the grace of Hashem,
26 Teves 5712,
Brooklyn, New York,
Greetings and blessings,
It is surely unnecessary to specify to someone like yourself that, in order to receive the heavenly brachos*, it is necessary to forge here below broad keilim*. And when one is bound to Torah, this itself constitutes these keilim, for it is "longer than the earth and broader than the sea."
Nevertheless, as Chazal* underscore in Maseches Shabbos 31a, a measure of salty earth must be mixed with it[1], so that this Torah may be preserved. Maseches Yoma 72b specifies that an effort is necessary so that Torah be a sam chayim*[2].
In our days, all this is possible thanks to the study of Chassidus*, the deep teaching of Torah, thanks to fervent tefillah* and the recitation of Tehillim*. Chazal underscore in Maseches Eruvin 65a that the study of Torah requires a clear mind. It is unnecessary to say more.
With my brachah* that you soon convey to me good news,
Notes
(1) Maseches Shabbos says that this salty earth, mixed with wheat, prevents it from spoiling.
(2) It therefore does not have this character naturally, and for one who makes bad use of it, it can even be a deadly poison.
