To the rav*, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Avraham Chanoch[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of 18 Teves and those that preceded it. Likewise I saw, in HaModia, your articles on the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov and on the yom tov* of the 19th of Kislev. I thank you very much for all this, which permits the preparation for the diffusion of the wellsprings[2] outward. For when these are diffused, each one will be able to have a better perception of them.

Furthermore, the desire has surely thereby been awakened in some to seek out these wellsprings. You will therefore pursue this activity. I am not certain that we receive here all the issues of HaModia in which your articles appear. It would therefore be preferable for you to send them to us systematically.

You ask whether it is possible to print such articles also in the non-religious newspapers. It is difficult to give a global answer to this question, valid for all newspapers at once. In fact, if these articles are not signed by someone religious, this cannot do harm, as long as their content is positive[3]. Of course, this is only a remark of general scope, and one must, each time, ask oneself which newspaper and which article it is. Nevertheless, in light of what has just been said, and inasmuch as this newspaper will not be able to say that such-and-such religious man is part of its editors, there is no risk.

I would like to make to you the following proposal. We are preparing to reedit the Beis Rebbi[4] in Hebrew. Hashem has given you literary talents, and you could therefore take charge of this translation[5], to present, in clear Hebrew, what concerns the Alter Rebbe, the Mitteler Rebbe, and the Tzemach Tzedek, basing yourself on the sichos* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. You will prepare three independent chapters, and you will tell me how much time you will need for the first to be ready and what salary you wish to receive.

Of course, if your text is published, it will be specified that you are the translator. It would also be necessary to add references at the end of the sefer* or in footnotes, indicating in which writing of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, this account can be found.

I await your good news for all this.

I am enclosing a copy of my letter, addressed to all, on the occasion of the "yom tov of all yomim tovim"*, the 19th of Kislev. You will kindly distribute it, for from here it is difficult to send it personally to each one.

בנועם קבלתי מכ' מח"י טבת וכן הקודמים לו, כן רואה אני בגליונות "המודיע" מאמריו ע"ד תורת הבעש"ט וחגיגת י"ט כסלו, ות"ח ת"ח על עסקו בהנ"ל, אשר זה מענין הכנה לפליטת המעיינות גם בחוצה, היינו שכאשר יפיצו אותם יוקלטו בטוב, ובטח ישנם גם אלו שנתעוררו עי"ז אצלם החשק לחפש אחרי המעיינות, ובטח ימשיך בדרכו זה גם להלן, וכיון שאיני בטוח אם מגיעים לכאן כל גליוני המודיע שיש בהם מאמרו, הנה מהנכון שישלח בכל פעם קטע מאמרו.

בענין שאלתו, אם להדפיס מאמרים כאלו גם בעתונים בלתי חרדים, הנה קשה לענות ע"ז מענה כללי לכל העתונים, ולכאורה אם היו נדפסים מאמרים כאלו שלא בחתימת איש חרדי אין חשש לקלקול, ובלבד שיהי' התוכן מתאים, מובן שאין זה אלא הערה כללית, ובכל פעם ופעם יש לדון על העתון וכן על המאמר, אבל בכלל באופן הנ"ל שלא יוכל העתון החפשי לאמר שפלוני ב"פ איש חרדי בין עורכיו והכותבים בו, אין חשש בזה.

באתי בהצעה בזה, כיון שמתעתדים כאן להו"ל עוד הפעם את ה"בית רבי" (בלה"ק) וכיון שחננו השי"ת בעט סופרים, אפשר יקח ע"ע להעתיק בלה"ק צחה את כל המסופר ע"ד אדמו"ר הזקן וכן ע"ד האמצעי וע"ד הצ"צ המובאים בשיחות כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, כ"א בכתב בפ"ע, וכן להודיעני כמה זמן לפ"ע יארך זה אצלו (עריכת החוברת הראשונה), ושכר טרחתו בעד זה, מובן שבאם יודפס זה שיעריך, יכתב שזהו בהעתקת פלוני ב"פ, ונחוץ ג"כ שיהי' מראה מקומות בסוף החוברת או בשולי הגליון, מראה מקום הספור בשיחת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר...
