To the rav*, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Yosef[1] HaLevi,

Greetings and blessings,

It is with pleasure that I received your letter of 18 Teves 5712. In the meantime, you have surely received mine, with what was enclosed.

A) I learned with satisfaction, from your letter, that the collection[2] was fruitful. May Hashem grant that this success continue, in the appropriate manner, and permit you to gather a substantial sum. You will continue to keep me informed.

B) I was pleased to read in your letter that you are thinking of going these days to Rhodesia, to visit the large cities. There too, in accordance with the wish of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, you will collect material goods and you will sow spirituality.

No doubt you will find there too people from chassidic families. You will therefore remind them of their origin. It would be good to inquire likewise about the situation of the other neighboring countries and, if appropriate, to travel there.

C) I was likewise pleased to read that you have set a fixed time to study Torah with Rav.... I received today a letter from him. You will surely find the texts that will leave a mark on him, so that he has the desire to pursue this study even after you have left the country.

D) It is very judicious that you underscore to the great rav, distinguished chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Y. Alay[3], the immense importance of organizing, from time to time, chassidishe* gatherings and Torah shiurim*.

It would be good to consider the publication of articles in the press on Chassidus* and on chassidim*, in the language of the country. You will surely find material that you will be able to use in all that has already been edited in English, for example the memoirs[4] and the English translation of the sichos* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, edited in HaKriah VeHaKedushah[5].

E) As for the youth, there has been sent to you, by separate envelope, the translation that has been made of the discussions with the students organized here. No doubt you will be able to make good use of it.

F) You tell me that Mrs. ... has decided to undergo an eye operation without waiting too long. May Hashem grant that this intervention go well and that she soon recover her strength.

I do not know the local custom[6], but if there exists in the shul* a ner tamid*, it would be good for her to participate in it. By contrast, if this practice does not exist, it is not necessary to institute it for this. She will then commit herself to financing the candles of the shul for some time.

She surely lights candles on erev Shabbos* and yomim tovim. It would be good for her to give tzedakah*, before doing so, dedicated to the fund of Rabbi Meir Baal HaNess[7].

G) I am enclosing a letter for.... I thank you for kindly delivering it to him.

H) I am also sending you the report of the words I spoke before the talmidim* on the occasion of the lighting of the fifth candle of Chanukah, and of what I said to the donors and the directors of Yeshivas Lubavitch who came to see me.

I) I saw incidentally[8] — but the Baal Shem Tov says that every event is a manifestation of Divine Providence — that the great rav, very aged, Rav Yosef Isser HaLevi Gad shlita*, of Johannesburg, has published the Rav Ephraim, a commentary on the Torah.

It would be good to suggest to him, to the extent possible, to send what he publishes to my library. The same applies if you meet other authors in the places that you visit. You may also propose to them, in exchange, seforim* of Chassidus published by Kehot.

I would also ask you, if it does not occasion you too great an inconvenience, to acquire the precious or rare seforim, in exchange for publications of Kehot, to the extent that this is possible. A double positive contribution will result from this. On the one hand, the recipients will possess seforim of Chassidus. Thus, inevitably, one day or another, they will use them. Furthermore, here we will have these seforim, which assuredly have a positive content.

בנועם קבלתי מכתבו מח"י טבת תשי"ב ובטח בינתים קבל ג"כ מכתבי עם המצורפים אליו.

א) שמחתי לקרות במכתבו אשר המגבית הולכת בהצלחה, כן יתן השי"ת לימים יבואו בהמשכת ההצלחה שיהי' באופן המתאים וגם בריבוי הכמות כפשוטו, ובטח יודיע גם להבא עד"ז.

ב) נהניתי לקרות במכ' שבדעתו לנסוע ימים אלו לראדעזיע ולבקר שם עיירות הגדולות, ובטח גם שם יתנהג כרצון כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר ניט נאר קלייבען גשמיות נאר אויך זייען רוחניות, ובודאי יעלה בידו למצוא בשם ג"כ מגזע אנ"ש ולעורר בם ולהעיר אותם בגזע מחצבתם, ומה טוב הי' אם הי' חוקר ודורש ע"ד שאר מדינות הסמוכות לשם ולבקר גם אותם.

ג) נהניתי לקרות במכ' ע"ד הקביעות שלו ללמוד עם הרב... שי' והיום קבלתי ג"כ מכתבו, ובטח ימצא הענינים שיהי' נשאר הרושם והחשק ללימוד זה אצל הנ"ל, גם אחרי נסעו משם.

ד) טוב במאד אשר מעורר את הרה"ג הרה"ח הוו"ח אי"א נו"נ עוסק בצ"צ מוהר"י שי' אלאי, ע"ד הנחיצות הכי גדולה לסדר מזמן לזמן התועדות ושיעורים, וצריך הי' להתענין ע"ד האפשריות להדפיס במכ"ע בשפת המדינה מאמרים ע"ד חסידות וחסידים, ובטח כבר ימצא חומר מוכן ממה שנדפס עד עתה באנגלית, וכמו מס' הזכרונות והעתקות שיחות כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר באנגלית ובהקריאה והקדושה וכיו"ב.

ה) בנוגע להנוער, נשלח לו בדואר במעטפה בפ"ע, מה שהעתיקו כאן מהשיחות עם הסטודענטין דפה, ואפשר יוכל להשתמש בזה באופן המתאים.

ו) הודעתו בענין מרת... תי', שהחליטו לעשות נתוח על עינה האחת מבלי לחכות זמן רב. הנה יה"ר מהשי"ת שיהי' הנתוח כשורה ותחזור לאיתנה בקרוב, איני יודע המנהג בשם, אבל אם ישנו נר תמיד בביהכ"נ, צריכה היתה להשתתף בזה (אבל לא לתקן זה מעיקרא) ואם אין שם תקנה כזו, הרי תקבל ע"ע למשך איזה זמן, הוצאת הנרות בביהכ"נ, ובטח מברכת נרות בעש"ק ועריו"ט, וטוב שתפריש לצדקת רמבעה"ן (רבי מאיר בעל הנס) קודם הדלקת הנרות.

ז) מוסג"פ מכ' ל... שי' ות"ח על הטרחה במסירתו לו.

ח) מוסג"פ רשימת השיחה לפני התלמידים שי' בנר חמישי דחנוכה וכן רשימת השיחה לפני הבע"ב עסקני הישיבה תו"ת, בביקורם אצלי.

ט) ראיתי במקרה - וכידוע שיטת הבעש"ט שהכל בהשגחה פרטית - ע"ד הרה"ג הישיש ר' חיים יוסף איסר הלוי לבית גד שליט"א מיאהאניסבורג שהו"ל ס' ר' אפרים על התורה, ומהנכון הי' אם מתאים הדבר לעוררו, וכן אם ישנם עוד מחברים בהמקומות שמבקר, שישלחו מכל היו"ל על ידם להספרי' שלי וגם להציע להם שישלחו להם תמורת זה מהיו"ל ע"י קה"ת ספרי דא"ח וכו', וכן בקשתי - אם אין טרחה יתירה בדבר - שבאם פוגש בספרים יקרי המציאות או שאינם מצוים כ"כ, ויש להחליפם באלו הספרים הנ"ל היו"ל ע"י קה"ת, לעשות גם בזה, ותהי' תועלת כפולה, שהם יקבלו את ספרי החסידות וכו' ולא ימלט שבזמן מן הזמנים לא יעיינו בהם, וספרי הנ"ל יהיו כאן, אשר בטח גם יש בהם ענין פנימי.

בברכת הצלחה בעבודתו בקדש ופ"ש כל הדו"ש ובפרט להרה"ג הרה"ח הוו"ח אי"א נו"נ עוסק בצ"צ וכו' מוה"ר ירמי' שי'.
