To the great rav*, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Shlomo[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 17[2] Teves, in which you tell me that talmidim* request a brachah*, in particular for studying Torah while being permeated with yiras Shamayim*. I am enclosing my reply to their request. You will surely add to it explanations and comments, according to what you judge necessary. I rely on your judgment.

Your letter also informs me that your son Mordechai Tzvi was married on 18 Teves. I express to you by the present letter my brachah, a brachah of Mazal Tov, Mazal Tov. May their union be in a good and propitious moment, may they found a Jewish home, founded upon Torah and mitzvos*, as Chassidus* explains. May you derive from them much Yiddishe and chassidishe nachas*.

P.S.: I am enclosing a copy of my letter, addressed to all, on the occasion of the "yom tov of all yomim tovim"*, which is the 19th of Kislev, and a prepaid postage coupon as a wedding gift.

You are no doubt descended from the rabbinical Greenwald family in Hungary. I would like to know more about this. Likewise, you tell me that your wife is the daughter of Rav Aharon Slutzki. I would like to know what was his knowledge of Kabbalah. Are there commentaries by him in our possession, written or printed? If so, is it possible to receive a copy of them?

You write to me that "young men have seen me"[3]. This applies only to a question, but not to a reply[4]. You will also consult the commentaries on chapter 138, paragraph 4, and chapter 242, on Maseches Kesubos 25b. In this connection, it is said there that "all know it," and one may inquire on this matter if one consults Maseches Menachos 93b. It is necessary to conclude that these two masechtos speak of two different periods[5]. But one may still inquire on this matter.

(3) Rav Greenwald wrote to the Rebbe: "I applied to my own case the terms of the following statement of Chazal: 'Young men have seen me and hidden themselves,' as the Yoreh Deah, chapter 242, paragraph 16, explains. Therefore I did not reply to the letter the Rebbe addressed to me." It was thus out of modesty that Rav Greenwald did not dare to reply to the Rebbe's previous letter.
(4) The Rebbe therefore replies that modesty may prevent one from addressing someone. By contrast, it cannot have the effect of not replying to one who has sent a letter.
(5) A period during which "all know it," and another during which this was not the case.
