Igrot Kodesh · Letter 136 — Man as Tree — Faith, Torah, and Influence

Volume 1 · Letter 136

It is said that "man is like the tree of the field" [1]. Thus, an important part of human existence identifies, from various points of view, with that of the plant kingdom.

The roots correspond to faith, which transcends intellect and reason. This enables a man to attach himself to the place and source of his vitality, that is to say, to the Holy One, blessed be He. For faith is indispensable to life, even for one who possesses profound wisdom, great knowledge of the Torah* and the practice of mitzvos*.

The trunk of the tree, which is its most important part, symbolizes Torah* and mitzvos*. It develops from year to year. For one who has limited intellectual means, whose knowledge is modest, must nonetheless have unshakeable faith. Conversely, Torah* and mitzvos* must constantly multiply. Each day must bring new ones and it is precisely for this that they were created.

It is said that one must "beautify oneself before Him" through Torah* and mitzvos*, accomplishments that are clearly visible to all, whose beauty the human intellect can recognize. There are also mitzvos* that have multiple aspects. Thus, tzitzis* constitute four mitzvos*, the Temple comprises many — the instruments of service, the sacrifices. This can be compared to branches, from which several small leaves emanate.

But the fruits possess a particular value. Indeed, there are mitzvos* that enable, when put into practice, to exert a positive influence on others. Thus, the commentary on the Mishnah* [2] explains the reason why one "consumes in this world the fruits" of mitzvos* accomplished toward other men. It emphasizes that one of the purposes of creation is the influence one can exert on one's fellow. In fact, a good deed that one accomplishes can make fruits grow, identical to what is at their origin.

The fact that the planting is lasting depends entirely on the seed which, by nature, has no taste and no fragrance. Everything therefore depends on the manner in which one addresses one's interlocutor. If one is filled with fear of Hashem, if one shows self-sacrifice, if one speaks with all the force of one's faith, one will grow a great tree, bearing much fruit and many branches.

Certainly, when one addresses another, faith remains hidden and one must have a logical discourse, just as the seed is hidden inside the fruit and covered by its shell. Now, the fruit and the shell do have a fragrance and a taste [3]. Nevertheless, it is indeed the self-sacrifice of the man that must lead him to speak and inflame his discourse.

It follows from what has just been said that the source of man and his connection with the origin of his existence passes solely through faith, without any artifice, without deception and without subterfuge. The slightest weakening of faith calls into question the existence of the tree, even if it is solid and large, possessing many branches. For if faith does not manifest in all its intensity, everything else is of no use.

The purpose of man is to multiply, each day, the accomplishments linked to Torah* and mitzvos*. Thus, he develops and "grows" constantly, expressing what he is, his quality and his profound nature. But within the trunk, the branches and even the leaves, flows the vitality [4] that the roots draw from the earth, that is to say, from the source of Jewish souls, and send into the different parts of the tree to vivify it.

Indeed, it is necessary, in order to put into practice the Torah* and mitzvos*, to awaken within oneself the force of self-sacrifice, as the Tanya* explains. This vivifies study and accomplishments.

But ultimately, the mission of man remains the influence he exerts on others.

Before the sin of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, all trees bore fruit. And this will also be the case in the future world.

Our Sages* teach that the first mitzvah* is that of procreation. A Jew must form another Jew.

One can therefore consider that the tree is perfect when one sees the fruits it gives, when it produces seeds that will enable the planting of other trees.

Such is therefore the teaching delivered by 15 Shevat, the New Year of the tree. The most important is the root — faith. Then comes the trunk, tall and wide — Torah* and mitzvos* which must be multiplied. Finally, perfection is marked by the quality of the fruit and the seed. When one does good to one's fellow, one takes responsibility for one's own merit and even for the public merit. One thus obtains all the desirable fullness.
