To the directors of the association of the Chabad chassidim*
in Eretz HaKodesh*, may it be rebuilt and restored,
may Hashem grant you long life,

Greetings and blessings,

A) I learned incidentally — but you know that everything is the effect of Divine Providence, as the Baal Shem Tov underscores — that the department of culture and education in our Eretz HaKodesh has received hundreds of thousands of seforim* that had been seized by the Nazis, may their name be blotted out. These have already arrived in Eretz HaKodesh, and an effort is now being made to identify their owners.

Furthermore, the ministry of religious affairs intends to distribute a portion of these seforim, in particular those of a religious character, to the yeshivos and schools of Eretz HaKodesh. It seems that this information is accurate, since it was accompanied by several details.

I therefore formulate the following proposal. You will present, as quickly as possible, the following twofold request:

1. Perhaps a portion of these seforim belonged to the library of my father-in-law, the Rebbe.

2. A substantial number of these seforim could be given for our yeshivos in Eretz HaKodesh, for example those of Lod and of Toras Emes. One could also mention those of the Kfar[1] and of Tel Aviv, if the distribution extends as well to such institutions.

Of course, if seforim belonging to the library of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, are found there, they must be taken and sent here. As for the seforim destined for the yeshivos, beyond their intrinsic interest, it is important that the ministries and the administrations know that a portion must come to the Lubavitch institutions of Eretz HaKodesh.

B) I urgently ask you, in the future, not to let me learn such things incidentally, even if there is in this an effect of Divine Providence. Let a member of the committee of the association of Chabad chassidim therefore be charged with taking interest in similar developments. Of course, this should not be "a pot belonging to partners"[2].

You will inform me, as quickly as possible, of what has been done in this matter.

C) I had a visit from the chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Aryeh Leib Gellman. According to what he told me, he will have returned to Eretz HaKodesh within two or three weeks. It would be good to prepare, for that date, a detailed plan of what it is possible to ask of him, as president of the coordinating committee in Eretz HaKodesh, in continuation of the note that was addressed to him some time ago, in order to formulate a request for our institutions. This made a good impression on him and he made it known here. For only the Chabad movement transmitted to him a detailed plan of work.

Concretely, I asked him, as soon as he obtains the funds, to put them at once at the disposal of the Chabad movement, in order to give it the means to set itself in action. He could of course not give me a clear answer, for the Mizrachi[3] must also benefit from this subsidy. It is therefore necessary to reiterate this request, a second and then a third time — all the more so as he himself agrees to accede to it, and one can therefore count on his help. Thus there is hope of receiving this subsidy more quickly and that the amount of it will be more substantial.

Everything therefore depends on the date on which the funds will be sent from here[4]. If I obtain information on this matter, I will communicate it to you. But all this must be prepared, and this position must be strongly marked with Mr. Gellman. One must act as quickly as possible.

D) I have learned that the yeshivos and the Talmud Torahs in Eretz HaKodesh can be subsidized by three bodies: the committee of yeshivos, the ministry of religious affairs, and the ministry of social affairs.

You will kindly communicate to me the information you have on this matter, for each of these bodies. Do they grant you subsidies, and if so, of what amount?

I await your reply on all these points and on my previous letters. The sooner the better, and I thank you in advance.

... נודעתי במקרה (אבל ידועה שיטת הבעש"ט שהכל בהשגחה פרטית) שמחלקת התרבות והחינוך באה"ק ת"ו קבלה מאות אלפים ספרים משלל הנאצים ימ"ש, וכבר נתקבלו ספרים אלו באה"ק ת"ו ועתה מחפשים הם אחרי שמות הבעלים. וכן בדעת משרד הדתות לחלק חלק מספרים הנ"ל - ובפרט אלו השייכים לדת - בין הישיבות והמוסדות שבאה"ק ת"ו. וכנראה שהידיעה אמיתית היא, כיון שמביאים בזה כמה פרטים. ולכן הצעתי שבהקדם היותר אפשרי, יעריכו בקשה ודרישה בשתים: א) אולי אפשר לברר אם ישנם שם מספרי' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר. ב) לדרוש שמספרים הנ"ל יתנו חלק מסויים וחשוב בשביל הישיבות שלנו באה"ק ת"ו כישיבת לוד ותו"א. ואולי אפשר ג"כ להוסיף את הישיבה בהכפר ות"א אם נותנים ג"כ לישיבות כאלו. מובן שבאם ימצאו שם ספרים מספרית כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר צריך לקבלם ולשלחם לכאן. ובנוגע לספרים בשביל הישיבות, הנה מלבד ענין הדבר מצד עצמו, מוכרח הוא שבכל ענינים כאלו, ידעו כל המוסדות והמשרדים שעליהם לתת חלק מסויים למוסדות ליובאוויטש אשר באה"ק ת"ו.

ה) נא ונא - בנוגע על להבא לא לסמוך ע"ז שיודע לי במקרה (ולו גם ע"י השגחה פרטית) על דבר ענינים כנ"ל, אלא שאחד מועד אגו"ח יתענין בנוגע ענינים כאלו והדומה (ובודאי צריכים באווארענען, שלא תהי, קדירה דבי שותפי). ויודיע לכאן בהקדם היותר אפשרי.

ו) ביקר אצלי הוו"ח אי"א וכו' מוה"ר ארי' ליב שי' געלמאן, וכפי דברו הנה בעוד ג'-ד' שבועות יהי' חזרה באה"ק ת"ו, ומהראוי הוא להכין לזמן ההוא תכנית פרטית מה שיש לדרוש ממנו בתור יו"ר מהקומיטה של קאארדינאציע באה"ק ת"ו, והוא בהמשך להתזכיר אשר הגישו לו לפני איזה זמן בדרישת מוסדותינו באה"ק ת"ו (שזה עשה עליו רושם טוב והודיע גם לכאן עד"ז, שחב"ד היו היחידים ששמעו מהם דברים מפורטים בנוגע לעבודה). דרשתי ממנו, בנוגע אל הפועל, שתיכף כשיתקבל הכסף לא יעכב את זה ויתנו לחב"ד את האפרשיות להתחיל בפעולות ממשיות. כמובן לא הי, יכול לענות לי בהן ברור, כיון שסוכ"ס גם על המזרחי לקבל עזרה בזה, אבל אם ידרשו פעם שתים ושלש, ובפנימיות הנה גם הוא רצונו בזה, אפשר לסמוך על סיוע שלו בזה, ואז יש לקוות להקדם הקבלה וגם לקבל סכום יותר גדול. כמובן - הפועל בזה יהי' תלוי בזמן שילוח הכסף מכאן (כשיהי' פרטים בזה אודיעכם) אבל בכ"א כל ההכנות בזה, והיינו גם דחיקה (דרוק) על מר געלמאן, נכון לעשות במוקדם.

ז) נודעתי אשר הישיבות והת"ת באה"ק ת"ו יכולים לקבל עזר בשלשה אופנים: מועד הישיבות, משרד הדתות, ומשרד הסעד. ונא להודיעני הפרטים בזה, ע"ד כאו"א מהמוסדות אם מקבלים מהנ"ל וכמה מכאו"א, וכן אם אפשר בזה לעשות עוד מכאן...
