Igrot Kodesh · Letter 135 — Supporting Jewish Education — Tu B'Shevat Teaching
Volume 1 · Letter 135
By the grace of Hashem,
Tuesday, 21 Shevat 5704,
To my dear friend, Mr. Bezboradko [1],
I greet you and bless you,
You will find enclosed a receipt regarding the donation you made to support the schools directed by the Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch*. On behalf of this institution, we express all our thanks for your contribution to this great work of educating Jewish children, in the purest spirit of the tradition.
We have great hope that in the future, you will further participate in this great work, that you will lead your friends and acquaintances to take an interest in it and to come to the aid of the Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch*. Each will do so according to his means and, when one enables one's fellow to perform a good deed, one thereby confers upon him a merit.
One of the special dates of this month is the New Year of the Trees, which delivers many teachings. Indeed, a man who pays attention to what happens around him can, by means of each thing, deepen his wisdom, improve his attitude toward Hashem and toward men. This is not true only for an unusual event, but also concerns the most ordinary situation, such as a tree that blossoms. This tree dispenses to man many lessons for his daily existence.
I will highlight a few of them here:
Plants and, in particular, trees are made up of different parts. Generally, three are identified: the roots, the trunk with its branches and leaves, and the fruits which have a shell, a pulp, and seeds.
One may note the following differences between these parts:
The roots are hidden and no one can see them. Yet it is they that bring to the tree the essential part of its vitality, although the leaves also draw from the air elements indispensable to the life of the tree and capture the heat of the sun. Moreover, the roots enable the tree to stand upright. If they are solid, no wind will be able to uproot it.
The trunk of the tree is its most important part. From time to time, its branches and leaves develop. Because of this, these and, more specifically the trunk, make it possible to determine the age of a tree.
Nevertheless, the fullness of the tree is marked in its fruits, whose seeds will serve to plant new trees.
Now, "man is like the tree of the field" and what characterizes trees can, in various ways, find its equivalent in his life. This is particularly true for his spiritual existence. Here too, one can determine three categories.
The roots correspond to faith, through which a man is connected to the Source of his existence, that is to say, to the Creator, blessed be He. And one who has accumulated immense wisdom, knows the Torah* and puts the mitzvos* into practice, nonetheless draws his vitality from his faith in Hashem, in His service and in His Torah*.
The trunk of the tree evokes the study of Torah*, the practice of mitzvos* and good deeds, which must constitute the major part of a man's conduct and accomplishments. And the age of a man can also be determined according to the number of mitzvos* he has fulfilled and the Torah* knowledge he has accumulated. It is thanks to them that he has a life full of content, wisdom, and achievements.
The fruits mark the entire perfection of man. One who possesses it does not content himself with assuming his personal obligations. This quality also exerts a positive influence on his surroundings and his environment, so that each person can acquire it in turn. His action consists of placing the seed from which a tree will grow, that is to say, a man who will have roots, will be permeated with faith, a trunk and branches — Torah* and good deeds — who will bear fruit, guide others in the right direction.
Here is what should be retained from all this development. The roots of man, the principal aspect of his existence, are pure faith. If this is weakened, his moral existence is in danger, even if he is, moreover, an important man.
The essential manifestations of a man's existence are his good deeds, which multiply from day to day.
But the perfection of man resides in the fruits he bears, that is to say, in the influence he exerts on the greatest number, in the merit he confers upon others by enabling them to assume the mission entrusted to them, to attain the purpose of their existence. Then, his actions produce fruits and these in turn produce fruits, in the succession of generations, so that the one who is at the origin of this process bears the responsibility of the collective merit.
With my blessing for an immediate teshuvah*, immediate redemption,
Rav Menachem Schneerson,
Director of the executive committee [2]
