To the great rav*, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem and faithfully devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Michoel[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received with satisfaction your letter of Monday of Parshas Vayigash and the previous one, in which you describe the chassidishe* gathering of 19 and 20 Kislev. You also tell me of the money offered on the occasion of Chanukah* to the talmidim* who study Chassidus*[2]. I thank you very much for having organized all this as it should be. May these positive accomplishments have a concrete effect, for action is paramount.

Enclosed is the report of the words I spoke here, before the talmidim who came to see me on the occasion of the kindling of the fifth Chanukah light. You will surely know how to express them in terms that will speak to those who hear them. Perhaps they will be translated into Hebrew in the coming days[3]. If so, a copy will be sent to you so that you may give a copy to each talmid.

You tell me that the talmidim who have not yet begun the study of Chassidus would also like to receive this money, and that they undertake to begin this study. Nevertheless, the time has not come to give them this money. They will obtain it later. Chassidus must be studied for its own sake and not in order to receive money on Chanukah. If they engage, without prior condition, in this study, they will derive from it a great profit, far surpassing that of the Chanukah money. Chazal* observe that "a hundred coins are included in two hundred"[4].

For your part, you may suggest to them that such occasions will yet present themselves in the future. It is therefore preferable to begin this study without prior condition.

Enclosed is a copy of my letter, drafted on the occasion of "the festival of all festivals," Yud-Tes Kislev*, which, it seems to me, has not yet been sent to you.

בנועם קבלתי מכתבו מב' ויגש והקודם, בהם כותב ע"ד התועדות די"ט כסלו וכ' כסלו, וכן מענין הנתינת מעות חנוכה להתלמידים הלומדים דא"ח, ות"ח ת"ח על שסידר את הענין באופן המתאים, ויה"ר שיבוא לפעולות טובות בנוגע אל הפו"מ, כי עשי' לעילא, ומוסג"פ רשימת דברים אשר אמרתי להתלמידים שנכנסו כאן אלי בנר החמישי דחנוכה, ובטח יתרגמם בלשון הטוב לפניהם, ואפשר שימים אלו יעשו ג"כ העתקה ללה"ק, ואז יושלח לו גם העתקה ע"מ לחלקה לכאו"א מאלו התלמידים.

במענה על בקשתם של אלו התלמידים שעדיין לא התחילו בלימוד החסידות, שחפצים ג"כ לקבל ומבטיחים להתחיל עתה בלימוד החסידות, הנה לא זהו הענין ועוד חזון למועד, ולימוד החסידות צ"ל מצד עצמו ולא בשביל זה שמקבלים המעות חנוכה, ואם יתחילו בלימוד הדא"ח בלא"ה, הרי בטח יביא תועלת גדולה הרבה יותר מקבלת מעות חנוכה, ויש בכלל מאתים מנה,

מצדו יכול לרמוז להם שבודאי יהי' עוד ענינים כאלו במשך הזמן ובמילא מהטוב שיתחילו בלימוד זה מבלי לקשר זה עם תנאים מוקדמים.

מוסג"פ העתק מכ' כללי בקשר עם חג החגים הוא י"ט כסלו שכמדומני עוד לא נשלח אליו.
