Igrot Kodesh · Letter 134 — Tefillin Campaign for Jewish Soldiers

By the grace of Hashem,

19 Shevat 5704,

To the very distinguished Rav, who fears Hashem,

the Shochet*, Rav Y. Y. Sheinfeld,

Roxbury, Massachusetts,

I greet you and bless you,

I have duly received the contribution of eighteen dollars that you transmitted to me, through our dear friend, who devotes himself to communal needs and whose conduct is admirable, Rav Yehudah Leib Horowitz. I have transmitted this amount to Machane Yisrael*, for the fund designated to purchase tefillin* for soldiers. You will find enclosed the receipt.

The opportunity to put on tefillin*, for those of our people who are in difficulty, is one of the priorities of Machane Yisrael*. This concerns, in particular, the soldiers. Thank Hashem, this campaign has borne fruit and many who had not put on tefillin* for many years or who had perhaps never done so, have now begun to fulfill this mitzvah*.

In order to make it easier to obtain their agreement to put on tefillin*, Machane Yisrael* offers them as a gift or sells them at a symbolic price, according to each person's wishes. However, for soldiers, they are always offered as a gift.

On this matter, you will surely be pleased to learn that we are making efforts to strengthen the morale and faith of the soldiers, by sending, from time to time, to those whose addresses we have, books and brochures, free of charge.

To give you an example, we are enclosing with this letter a message to soldiers from my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita* [1], which was distributed in several thousand copies, as well as a letter emphasizing the importance of the mitzvah* of tefillin*. If you wish to enrich our file with the addresses of certain soldiers, we will send them, in the future, all our publications.

Since I mention tefillin*, I will make a proposal. You have the merit of being one of the first donors for the purchase of these tefillin*. You will therefore intensify your involvement in this area. You are, of course, very busy, but you can also approach your friends who fear Hashem and organize together, in your city, a systematic campaign for putting on tefillin*.

Words emanating from the heart will surely penetrate the heart of the one who hears them. With the help of Hashem, you will bring to all a great spiritual merit — the mitzvah* of tefillin* — and a material one — the protection that flows from it.

You know what the Rambam* says on this matter. One must lead the ignorant, women, and children to serve Hashem through fear, until they have reached the maturity enabling them to serve Him through love. And the Rambam* explains that one who serves Hashem through fear desires, above all, to obtain all the rewards that the practice of mitzvos* brings.

נדבתו בסך שמונה עשר דאלאר אשר מסר על דעתי הגיעתני ע"י ידידנו הנכבד והנעלה עוסק בצרכי צבור באמונה ובעל מדות תרומיות אי"א התמים ר' יהודה לייב שי' הורביץ, ומסרתי הכסף ל"מחנה ישראל" להקופה המיוחדת להוצאות קנית תפילין לאנשי צבא, ומוסג"פ קבלה.

מקום חשוב בעבודת "מחנה ישראל" תופסת עבודת התעמולה ע"ד הנחת תפילין בין נדחי עמנו בכלל, ואנשי הצבא בפרט, ובע"ה הצליחה העבודה ורבים מאלה שזה שנים רבות אשר לא הניחו תפילין, ואולי לא הניחו כלל מימיהם, התחילו כעת לקיים מצוה גדולה זו,

וכדי להקל הנסיון לאלה להשיג הסכמתם להניח תפילין, ניתן להם תפילין מ"מחנה ישראל" חנם או במחיר קטן וכפי רצון כאו"א, ובפרט לאנשי הצבא, שנשלחים התפילין במתנה

אגב בטח יענין אותו לדעת כי בנוגע לאנשי צבא, משתדלים אנו לחזק את רוחם ואמונתם ע"י ספרים וחוברות שונים ששולחים אנו מזמן לזמן חנם לכל אנשי הצבא אשר כתבותיהם ידועה לנו.

לדוגמא מצרפים אנו בזה את המעסעדזש מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א לחילים אשר נתחלק כבר לאלפים וגם מכתב ע"ד תפילין, ובאם מעונין כמ"ע שנשלח גם את מי ממיודעיו החילים על רשימתנו, נשלח להלן גם להם את החוברות השונות.

ומדי דברי ע"ד תפילין אציע לפניו, שאחר שזכה להיות מן התומכים בכספו להוצאות קנית תפילין, ילך בזה מחיל אל חיל, ואף שטרוד הוא יתענין להתדבר עם מכיריו אשר דבר ה' נגע ללבם, ויתחילו בעמולה מסודרת בעירו בענין הנחת תפילין, ובטח שדבריהם היוצאים מן הלב יכנסו אל לב השומעים, ויעלה בע"ה בידיהם להיות מן המזכים את הרבים ברוחניות - היינו הנחת תפילין, ובגשמיות - השמירה הבאה בעקבות קיום המצוה, וידוע מ"ש הרמב"ם בזה (הל' תשובה פ"י ה"א) שעמי הארץ והנשים והקטנים מחנכין אותן לעבוד מיראה עד שתרבה דעתן ויעבדו מאהבה וביאר שם שהעובד מיראה כוונתו בזה העובד ע"מ שיקבל כל הברכות הבאות בשכר המצות.
