Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1337 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 5 · Letter 115
By the grace of Hashem,
8 Teves 5712,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I would like to ask you to excuse me for what may appear to you as an intrusion into matters that concern you personally, without your having permitted me to do so. But basing myself on what I have heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, regarding ahavas Yisroel* — on the importance, for each one, of caring for all Yidden* at once, including those one has never met — I take the liberty to address the following matter.
Some time ago, your brother came to see me, and among other things I inquired with him about your family situation. He told me that for the time being you are living alone with your daughter. I am particularly surprised at this. Why are you not seeking a shidduch* that suits you?
You no doubt know what Chazal* say in this regard, basing themselves on the verse: "Sow your seed in the morning, so that in the evening...[1]." Moreover, you are still far from the evening[2]. With the help of Hashem, you can still build a Jewish home and have children.
Nevertheless, as Chazal underscore, "it is the way of a man to seek out[3]," and "Hashem your Elokim will bless you in all that you do"[4]. An effort on the part of the man is therefore necessary in this area.
If this has always been so, how much more is it the case at the present hour, after the terrible losses suffered by the Jewish people. Moreover, Yidden who fear Hashem are a minority. It is therefore certain that anyone who has the possibility of building a home that respects the Will of Hashem, filled with "the candle (which) is a mitzvah* and the Torah (which) is a light," with the luminary of Torah, must strive to do so as far as possible. All Yidden are brothers, and so this is not solely a matter that concerns you personally.
I ask you once again to forgive me for writing all this to you, although I do not know you. I am certain that you will not hold it against me at all, and above all that you will reflect on what has just been said, and then strive to find a shidduch that suits you. Hashem will grant you success.
With my blessing that you convey good news to me in this matter,
