Igrot Kodesh · Letter 133 — Outreach and Jewish Education Partnership

By the grace of Hashem,

New Year of the Trees [1] 5704,

To the distinguished Rav, Rav Kelman [2], Toronto,

I greet you and bless you,

You have no doubt heard of the work of Machane Yisrael* and the Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch*, which were founded by my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita*. The main lines of these activities are set forth in the enclosed brochures. We are sending you, in a separate package, some specimens of the modern publications that the Merkaz* publishes for the youth.

According to what has been told to us about you, you could no doubt, with the help of Hashem, take an active part in the work of Machane Yisrael* and the Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch*, in your city in general and among those whom you guide in particular. Thus, you will acquire merit and cause others to acquire it.

Particular attention must be given to the dissemination of educational books, conforming to our purest tradition, among the widest circles of the youth, including those who, for the moment, do not yet receive Jewish education.

We would be happy to correspond with you. Obviously, we are ready to assist you, with the help of Hashem, in the accomplishment of this mission, to the full extent of our means [3].

The verses say that "man is like the tree of the field" and "the house of Israel is the vineyard of Hashem." The fruits thereof are the children, boys and girls. Great is therefore the responsibility of the director and the educator, to whom the Owner has entrusted His vineyard.

This is the reason why, say our Sages*, teaching Torah* to children is "a divine work." You have a particular merit and Hashem has charged you with guarding His vineyard. And the slightest improvement of the seed is of considerable benefit for the tree that will subsequently grow.

בטח שמע כת"ר מפעולותיהם של "מחנה ישראל" ושל ה"מרכז לעניני חנוך", אשר נתיסדו ע"י כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א, ואשר ראשי פרקים ע"ד מטרותיהם מובן מהגליונות המוסג"פ, ושולחים אנו לכת"ר בחבילה מיוחדת דוגמאות מהחוברות החדשיות לבני הנעורים היו"ל ע"י המרכז.

וכפי ששמעונ ע"ד כת"ר בטח יוכל בע"ה לפעול הרבה בעבודת "מחנה ישראל" וה"מרז לעניני חנוך" בעירו בכלל, ובתוך הקרובים ביותר להשפעתו בפרט, ולהיות בזה מן הזוכים ומזכים את הרבים.

ומהראוי לתשומת לב ביותר הוא הפצת ספרי חנוך שהם על טהרת הקודש בין חוגי הנוער היותר רחבים אף שהם רחוקים, לע"ע, מחנוך כשר.

נשמח אם יעמד אתנו בחליפת מכתבים, ומובן מאליו, כי מוכנים אנו לעזר לו בע"ה בעבודתו הנ"ל במדת האפשרות.

אמר הכתוב כי האדם עץ השדה, כרם ד' צבאות - בית ישראל, והפירות הם הילדים כבנים כבנות, ומה גדולה אחריות המנהיג והגנן, אשר בידו מסר בעל הכרם כרמו, שלכן אמרז"ל שלימוד הילדים נקרא מלאכת ד', ומה גדול זכותו אשר מנהו ד' לנוטר כרמו, ורואים אנו אשר כל הטבה ואפילו קטנה, בגרעין, גורמת יפוי ושבח רב באילן הצומח ממנו.
