Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1318 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 5 · Letter 96 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
28 Kislev 5712,
Brooklyn,
To the great rav*, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Avraham Chaim[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I have received your letters in their time, and reply to them herewith.
In your letter of 7 Marcheshvan, you pose the following question. When Rosh Chodesh* Elul falls on Shabbos and Sunday, one reads on Shabbos the haftarah* HaShamayim Kis'i[2]. Must one also read two pesukim* of the haftarah Machar Chodesh[3]? You express in your letter the view that one should not do so, thereby setting aside entirely this haftarah of Machar Chodesh. This is indeed the position you have adopted in your sefer*, the Ketzos HaShulchan, sec. 3.
A) We have had the merit to receive on this matter a teaching from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, which is printed in Siddur Torah Or, edition of 5701[4]. When Shabbos Parshas HaChodesh is also Rosh Chodesh[5] or erev Rosh Chodesh, one must say after the haftarah of Parshas HaChodesh also the first and last pesukim of the haftarah of Shabbos Rosh Chodesh[6] or of Machar Chodesh.
Thus it is clearly established that these pesukim may even be recited in the absence of any opinion that the haftarah from which they are drawn must be read. For all agree that one does not read the haftarah Machar Chodesh on Shabbos Parshas HaChodesh. Despite this, one does read the first and last pesukim of that text.
The same therefore applies to Rosh Chodesh Elul, when it falls on Shabbos and Sunday. One must then read the pesukim of the haftarah Machar Chodesh. This also has a bearing on the next Shabbos, that of Chanukah*, when Rosh Chodesh Teves is on Shabbos and Sunday. In my opinion[7], based on what has just been said, one must read after the haftarah of Shabbos Chanukah the first and last pesukim of the haftarah of Rosh Chodesh[6] and also those of Machar Chodesh.
One will first recite the verse HaShamayim Kis'i, more important than the haftarah of Machar Chodesh and which moreover comes first in time, although the second day of Rosh Chodesh is the more central.
B) You say that it seems necessary to you to precede the Hataras Nedarim[8] with a Yehi Ratzon, and you write that such is our practice[9].
The minhagim* printed in the kuntres* were explicitly taught by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and he clearly told me that there is no place to recite this Yehi Ratzon. His father, the Rebbe Rashab, held the same position, as is printed in Siddur Tehillas Hashem, the Rostov edition of 5678[10], which introduces the text with "Shim'u na rabbosai, hakol yihyu mutarim, harei ani moser moda'ah, kulam yihyu mutarim"[11].
C) Concerning the one who indicates the soundings of the shofar*[12], you say that he merely points with his finger[13] only when it is the Rebbe who blows.
You surely know that for many years the Rebbe Rashab did not blow himself, but indicated the soundings to the one who was to do so. The same was true of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, in the final years. Both of them pointed with the finger and announced nothing aloud.
D) I asked you about the manner of reciting Selichos* during the fast of Gedaliah[14]. I wished to know which paragraphs should be recited, how many times one should interpolate Keil Melech, since it is clearly the case that one does not adopt the order set forth in the Selichos.
This order has been printed, according to the instructions of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, in Siddur Torah Or, cited above. Now, one does not recite the Yud-Gimmel Middos HaRachamim* more than three times, except on Motzaei Menucha[15] and on erev Rosh Hashanah*.
We have the custom not to recite Selichos during the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah*, with the exception of the fast of Gedaliah, and in this latter case one does so as a public fast. One must therefore recite Keil Melech three times, as on every fast. The Siddur Lavut states this explicitly.
Consequently, it is necessary to determine which paragraphs should be omitted. Perhaps the elder chassidim* of the Holy Land have received a tradition on this matter. I thank you in advance for kindly informing me on this point.
E) In addition to the time of achilas peras[16] defined in the notes at the end of the Reshimos on Eichah, p. 61, notes 2 and 3, I have just found the following measures in Vayaas Avraham, by the Rebbe of Tchechanov, p. 456: five and one-third minutes, two and two-thirds minutes, or two minutes.
F) I had occasion to take note of what you wrote in the erev Sukkos issue of HaModia. It is true that everyone may comment on the Torah as he understands it. Nevertheless, you express your surprise that there is no halachah* in ch. 625 of Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim.
To this one may answer that:
1. The same is true of ch. 430.
2. The halachah presented by ch. 625 is, in general, that of dwelling in the sukkah*. Nevertheless, it is introduced in the words of the verse.
This allows one to interpret the opening of ch. 639: "How does one fulfill the mitzvah* of the sukkah?" For the Shulchan Aruch should also have cited the words "in order that they may know"[17], which likewise introduce a halachah, since lechatchilah one must be aware that one is sitting in a sukkah, as the Bach, the Pri Megadim, and the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe explain at length. Practically, this requirement of awareness — which is essential — would not be mentioned in the Shulchan Aruch, as you advance in HaModia, if one does not accept this explanation.
Nevertheless, the printer, whose knowledge was imperfect, sought to reduce his effort by abridging the citation of the verse. He therefore omitted the words "in order that your generations may know." There is a strong presumption that this is so, and that one must add to the Shulchan Aruch the words "in order that they may know," since these appear in the Tur and in the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe, which moreover do not cite the entire verse.
With my greetings — to you and to your Torah — and my blessing,
