To the great rav*, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Ephraim Eliezer HaKohen[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I thank you for your letter of 21 Kislev. I was gratified to learn that you have begun the study of Chassidus* with the Siddur. May Hashem grant that you also have success in time, as the mitzvah* of the Chanukah* lights demonstrates — which can be fulfilled in the ordinary manner, in the mehadrin* manner, or in the mehadrin min hamehadrin* manner[2].

This can be compared to the miracle itself, which according to the opinion of several later Sages could have been kindled with impure oil, since it is a public korban*. The tzaddik* and great rav of Ostrovtsa[3] discusses this at length, as is his way, in his sefer* that has just been printed[4].

But a miracle corresponding to the mehadrin manner occurred, and the flask of oil was found. A second miracle took place, introducing the mehadrin min hamehadrin manner, and that quantity of oil burned for eight days — just as the harp in the World to Come will have eight strings. And the entire people adopts the mehadrin min hamehadrin manner of fulfilling the mitzvah.

I await good news from you concerning the positive activities being carried out in the area of chinuch*, which is bound up with Chanukah. Its virtuous character is symbolized by the fact that the flask bore the seal of the Kohen Gadol*.

P.S.: I have received your letter dated the fourth night [of Chanukah]. I thank you for having recorded your memories of luminous days and what you remember of your forebears.

Last Thursday, when I was at the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, I mentioned your name for the satisfaction of all your needs. I therefore inform you of this, in accordance with the teaching of Chazal*: "One who gives[5]... must inform him."

When you reported to me what the Ramban says about seeing the face of the tzaddik, it seems to me that I answered you that I had seen this in a certain sefer. I have indeed found it in Vayosef Avraham, by Rav Lipschitz, published in Munkatch in 5691[6], paragraph 34. It is stated there that this is also alluded to in Divrei Torah, vol. 1, paragraph 27, by the Munkatcher Rebbe.

Enclosed is the report of what was said before the talmidim* on the fifth night of Chanukah.

You tell me you remember that he would take the shamash*[7] from the hands of his grandson after reciting the brachah*. One can wonder about this if one consults the Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim, ch. 167, sec. 3.

ת"ח על מכתבו מכ"א כסלו... ושמחתי על הודעתו מהתחלתו בלימוד דא"ח בסידור, ויה"ר שיהי' להצלחה גם בזמן. וכהוראת מצות חנוכה שיש שם קיום המצוה כפשוטה, ומהדרין, ומהדרין מן המהדרין [אשר י"ל שזהו בדוגמת הנס שלדעת כמה מהאחרונים אפשר הי' להדליק ג"כ בשמן טמא, כיון שזהו קרבן צבור וכו' (האריך בזה בפלפול כדרכו הרה"צ והרה"ג וכו' מאוסטרובצה, בספרו הנדפס עתה) ואעפ"כ נעשה נס (הידור) שנמצא פך שמן, ובנס זה גופא נעשה עוד נס (מהדרין מן המהדרין) שלא הי' בו אלא כו' ודלק שמונה ימים, כנור דלע"ל, שהוא של שמונה נימים]. ונהגו כל העם - כמ' מן המ'!

המחכה לבשו"ט בענין פעולות הטובות בחינוך הכשר: חנוך ענין חנוכה, והכשר כו' פך אחד חתום בחותמו של כה"ג וכו'.

קבלתי גם מכתבו מנר הרביעי, ות"ח על רשימת זכרונות ימים הבהירים ממה שזוכר מאבותיו זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע.

כשהייתי על הציון של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע ביום ה' העבר, הזכרתיו להמצטרך לו, והנני מודיעו עד"ז נשען על מרז"ל הנותן וכו' צריך להודיעו.

כמדומה שאמרתי לכת"ר שי' כשאמר לי מ"ש הרמב"ן בנוגע לראיית פני צדיק שראיתי עד"ז באיזה ספר, והנה מצאתיו בס' ויוסף אברהם להרב ליפשיץ (מונקאטש, תרצ"א) ס"ק ל"ד. ומביא שם שמדובר עד"ז בדבר"ת חלק א' אות ז"ך להרה"צ ממונקאטש.

במש"כ שזוכר שהי' לוקחים את נר השמש אחרי הברכה מיד נכדו צ"ע משו"ע או"ח סקס"ז ס"ג.
