Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1316 — Health
Volume 5 · Letter 94
By the grace of Hashem,
28 Kislev 5712,
Brooklyn,
To the rav*, distinguished chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Dovid Nosson[1],
Greetings and blessings,
I was glad to receive your gift of wax candles for Chanukah*. Based on what I told you some time ago, and in accordance with the statement of the Zohar, vol. 2, p. 128b, that a Yid* must pay in order to fulfill a mitzvah*, I am sending you a check. You will use it in good health to acquire what you wish in a positive manner.
I shall also consider a point that is timely.
The miracle of Chanukah was the victory in battle. Why was it necessary in addition that the miracle of the flask of oil should occur? Furthermore, if a pure flask remained, why could it not have contained the quantity necessary to burn for the time required to produce pure oil? And why make a miracle within another miracle, since on the one hand a flask was found, and on the other hand a small amount of oil sufficed for eight days?
Based on the words of later Sages[2], one might perhaps consider that the Torah would have permitted kindling with impure oil — either because it is a public korban*, or because liquid belonging to the Beis HaMikdash* cannot contract impurity. Nevertheless, through their effort the Yidden then transcended reason and gave of themselves with mesirus nefesh*. Hashem then displayed His love for them, and although it would have been permitted to kindle with impure oil, a miracle transcending reason allowed them to find a flask of pure oil.
There are two manners of mesirus nefesh. Chassidus* defines the self-sacrifice of Rabbi Akiva, who said: "When will it be given to me to do so?" Such a course indeed transcends reason — yet it provides a pleasure. The mesirus nefesh of Avraham Avinu*, by contrast, is loftier. He undertook the mission entrusted to him, and "he called there in the Name of Hashem, Keil Olam," a verse in which one should not read "he called" but "he caused others to call." Then, if for that purpose he had to give of himself, he did not stand in the way. He therefore did not sacrifice himself because it was precious and pleasant to him, but because one had to act in this way, since there was no other means of fulfilling his mission in the world.
On Chanukah it was the same, and the Yidden gave of themselves so as not to "forget Your Torah and the chukim* of Your Will." If they had to offer their lives, they were ready for this, but they felt no particular pleasure in doing so.
That is why a miracle within another miracle was performed for them. For the discovery of the flask of oil was miraculous. But another miracle additionally occurred: it should have burned for one night only, yet it burned for eight days, so that only pure oil would be used.
It is known that the Yidden are compared to oil, because, like it, they do not mix with other liquids — according to Midrash Rabbah, beginning of Parshas Tetzaveh. That is why it is possible to fulfill the mitzvah of Chanukah in the ordinary manner, in the mehadrin* manner, and in the mehadrin min hamehadrin* manner, which corresponds to nigleh* of Torah, to its secrets, and to the secrets of its secrets[3].
May Hashem cause the footsteps of the Tarmodites[4] — anagram of moredes, rebellion — to disappear soon. You will add, you will advance, you will progress in matters of holiness, from sunset, in the darkness of night, so that "the night will shine like the day."
With my blessing,
