Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1310 — Shidduchim
Volume 5 · Letter 88
By the grace of Hashem,
26 Kislev 5712,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
In reply to your letter, in which you inform me that your son has reached the age of five and has entered cheder*. May Hashem grant that you raise him to Torah, chuppah*, and good deeds, together with your wife, in expansiveness, with peace of mind and peace of body.
At the chassidishe* gathering of the recent Shabbos Mevarchim*, the traditional formula of the Jewish people[1] — "to Torah, chuppah, and good deeds" — was explained as alluding to the three Avos*. For the Torah introduces Yaakov, who dwelt in the tent of Shem and Ever, evoking the Written Torah and the Oral Torah. The chuppah refers to Yitzchak, bound at the place where the Beis HaMikdash* was built.
In Midrash Shir HaShirim, as well as in Zohar, vol. 3, p. 3b, and in the Mishnah at the end of Maseches Taanis, Chazal* designate as a "wedding" the day on which the Shechinah* revealed itself in the Beis HaMikdash. HaKadosh Baruch Hu* then entered beneath the "chuppah" together with Yisroel. Various texts of Chassidus* state this expressly, commenting on the saying of Chazal that "the conversation of the servants of the Avos is preferable[2]." That is why the marriage of Yitzchak and Rivkah[3] is described at length by the Torah. It is, in fact, an event of general import that concerns all of Israel.
Finally, the good deeds allude to Avraham, who was distinguished by his acts of chesed*, and in particular by his tzedakah*. The Torah Or, at the beginning of Parshas Va'eira, explains that each person must find within himself the equivalent of the three Avos, but not the equivalent of the sons of Yaakov[4].
You also write in your letter that you are traveling abroad as an emissary of the Lubavitcher yeshiva*. May Hashem grant that you have material and spiritual success, in accordance with the saying[5] of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, regarding the emissaries of our institutions: "They must collect material things and sow spiritual things."
With my blessing,
