B'ezras Hashem,
22 Kislev 5712,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter written at the conclusion of Shabbos* Toldos, in which you ask me how to undertake the study of Chassidus*, and whether there exists a methodical work presenting hishtalshelus* — the chain of worlds.
A) It is difficult for me to tell you how to undertake this study without knowing your tastes and what attracts you, what you already know of Chassidus*. I will therefore give you a general response, which proves suitable in most cases.
In addition to the Tanya*, you should study the Derech Mitzvosecha — also called Sefer HaMitzvos — of the Tzemach Tzedek*. As with all other parts of Torah, you should not, the first time, seek to grasp every word. You will content yourself with the general sense. After having repeated this study once or twice — superficial but global, on various subjects — you will then be able to analyze each idea and each word.
B) You ask me whether there is a sefer* of Chassidus* that presents hishtalshelus*. This is in fact the subject of Sha'ar HaYichud of the Mitteler Rebbe*, which, at its beginning, also defines hisbonenus*.
C) You know the verse: "Hashem made man upright, but they sought out many calculations"[1]. For many generations Jews learned Torah without asking themselves how to organize their study so that it might be fruitful, in conformity with the rules of pedagogy. Yet recently some have led a profound analysis to define programs and subtleties. The consequences of such conceptions are the opposite of what one might have expected.
For the earlier generations had a true thirst to study Torah, which they did not even question. Their knowledge multiplied, in quantity and quality. Then these rules were established, and those who devoted themselves to study diminished, as did their fervor in study.
Now, exactly the same applies to Chassidus*. The best means of attaining its knowledge is not to adopt all these conceptions, to learn and learn again without looking at the watch, and then to take stock of the ideas one has understood during that time. The more deeply one delves into the study of Chassidus*, and the more one refines one's mind and heart, the more one becomes a vessel suited to internalize the light of Chassidus* and especially the luminary it bears within itself.
D) The Rambam*, in his Mishneh Torah, at the end of Hilchos Mikvaos, specifies that ritual immersion also alludes to the necessity of immersing oneself in healthy ideas. Now, this immersion is valid only when the water entirely covers the head. And so it is with healthy ideas, which must transcend the intellect and the knowledge. One must abandon to them one's rationality and one's knowledge.
Hashem will grant you success and an authentic yiras Shamayim*. You will give tzedakah* with increased fervor. In this way, as the Alter Rebbe assures us at the beginning of Torah Or*, "his mind and heart are refined a thousandfold." And the Likkutei Torah*, on three Parshiyos, commenting on this statement, specifies that it must be interpreted in its most literal sense — that is, really a thousandfold, without any exaggeration, without it being a figure of speech.
Thus, in little time, but with much effort, you will progress in your knowledge and you will fulfill, in the best way, the mitzvah* of studying Torah.
You doubtless participated in the Chassidic farbrengen* of the "festival of all festivals," Yud-Tes Kislev*. I would like to know what good resolutions you took, in this propitious moment, regarding ahavas Yisroel*, ahavas haTorah*, and ahavas Hashem*.
As for the time to be devoted to the study of the revealed part of Torah and Chassidus*, you will consult the Kuntres Etz Chaim, chapters 22 to 25.
With my blessing,
