Volume 5 · Letter 78 · To: grand Rav

B'ezras Hashem,

22 Kislev 5712,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Tzvi Hirsh[1],

Greetings and blessings,

On the occasion of your wedding, which will be celebrated in a good and propitious hour, I extend to you and to your kallah* my brachah* — a brachah* of mazal tov*, mazal tov*. May it take place in a good and propitious hour. You will build a Jewish home, founded on Torah and mitzvos*, as they are explained by Chassidus*.

You ask me what spiritual preparation your kallah* should undertake for the wedding. I have not received clear-cut instructions on this. I know that several chapters of Tehillim* are to be recited, but I have not been able to determine which ones. Consequently, when I am asked about this, I instruct the kallah* to read all of them on the day of her wedding[2]. Obviously, she must also know the laws she will need to apply, which is, in the end, the essential thing — for action is primary, as the Zohar* emphasizes.

At the Chassidic farbrengen* of the "festival of all festivals," Yud-Tes Kislev*, your name was mentioned, for good, for brachah*, and for a mazal tov*.

As for what concerns yourself, you doubtless know that one wears a kittel*[3] under the chuppah*. But one wears it under one's garment, so that it does not show. Then, for the first Yom Kippur after the wedding, one does not wear it, since one has already worn it for one's personal Yom Kippur, which is the day of the wedding[4].

Likewise, one strives, during the ceremony, not to wear objects of gold or silver, or coins. One must have no knot upon oneself, and one will therefore loosen one's tie and one's shoelaces. Obviously, to all of this are added the practices common to all Jewish communities in all other matters — for example, the addition of the Al Cheit*[5] paragraph in the Mincha* prayer.

May Hashem grant that all of this take place, in every respect, in a good and propitious hour.

With my brachah* of mazal tov*, mazal tov*,

M. Schneerson
