Igrot Kodesh · Letter 129 — Kehot Distribution Policy and Tanya Publication

To the distinguished and honorable Rav, Rav E. Karasik [1],

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 10 Kislev*:

A) It is a pity that you did not know in time that our publications were not to be distributed free of charge. We have good hope that in the future, you will follow our instructions well, with the help of Hashem. You will also try to repair the past, to the extent possible, for the lack of means [2] is an obstacle to new publications.

B) The Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch strives that all schools teaching the Holy Language, regardless of the country in which they are located, do so in the manner most conforming to tradition. It is for this purpose that we publish study and reading books of proper content. This does not prejudge in any way the opinion, favorable or otherwise, that the Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch may have of these schools.

C) We receive with pleasure constructive suggestions, which we will take into account in our upcoming publications. In any event, all criticisms interest us and we thank you for transmitting to us any that you may have become aware of. You will also specify who is the author — someone who has good intentions or one who seeks to accuse the Chabad movement and the Chassidim, in general.

D) It is important that a committee for the distribution of publications, whether Chassidic writings or the books of the Merkaz L'Inyonei Chinuch, be constituted as soon as possible and get to work. We do not know who should be part of it so that it functions with diligence, without calling into question the other activities currently being carried out. We therefore enclose a letter addressed to all. You will hold a meeting and you will choose yourselves those who are most suitable. You will then let me know who has been chosen and we will be able to write to them directly.

E) If, for any reason, the creation of this committee is delayed, you will kindly let me know how many copies of each new publication should, for the time being, be sent to you.

F) We have just completed the printing of a compilation of the talks and Chassidic discourses delivered in Chicago, in 5702 [3], as well as the texts of 18 Elul 5703, the second and fourth volumes of the Sifreinu*. Our upcoming publications will be the commentary on the Mishnah by the Tzemach Tzedek, by photograph of the first edition, and the Hayom Yom 5704. We are also preparing the edition of a compilation of letters of the Rebbe Shlita.

G) You will kindly let me know whether the Tanya that you had printed [4] is a photograph of the old edition or whether it was the subject of a new typesetting, the number of copies that were printed and whether you still have the printing plates.

במענה על מכתבו מי' כסלו:

א) חבל על שלא נודע בעתו כי אין לחלק חנם את עניני הדפוס, אבל עתה תקותינו אשר ישתדל כעת שיסודר בע"ה הכל כפי הוראתינו וגם לתקן בנוגע להעבר במדה האפשרית, כי רק חסרון אמצעים מעכב הדפסת כמה ענינים.

ב) המל"ח משתדל כי בכל המדינות ובכל בתי-הספר אשר לומדים בהם לשון הקדש ילמדו אותה על טהרת הקדש, ולתכלית זו מוציאים לאור ספרי-לימוד וקריאה מתאימים לזה, אבל אין זה הוראה על שום יחס של המל"ח, חיובי או שלישי, לבתי הספר הנ"ל.

ג) שמחים אנו לשמע הערות נכונות אשר כדאי להתחשב אתם בהוצאות הבאות, בכל אופן מענין אותנו לדעת את כל דברי הבקורת, ונודה לו כשיודעינו מה ששמע בזה, ומאיזה סוג אנשים באה הבקורת: מאלו שכוונתם רצוי', אלו המחפשים עלילות על חב"ד והחסידים וכיו"ב.

ד) באשר חשוב מאד כי הועד להפצת עניני הדפוס - הן בדא"ח הן בעניני חנוך ומחנה ישראל - יתיסד בהקדם האפשרי ויגש לעבודה, באשר איננו יודעים מי הראוים לזה באופן אשר העבודה תתנהל במרץ ויחד עם זה גם לא תפריע לענינים אחרים אשר עוסקים [ע] תה בסהם, מצרפים אנו בזה מכתב כללי, ובטח תתאספו כלכם ותבחרו בהכי מתאימים לזה, ואחר שתודיעונו מי הם נוכל אי"ה לבא בכתובים ישר עמהם.

ה) אם מפני איזה סבה תתעכב התיסדות הועד הנ"ל מטובו להודיע כמה עקז' לשלוח להם מכל סוג מהנדפס, לע"ע.

ו) נגמר עתה בדפוס קונטרס שיחות ומאמרי טשיקאגא תש"ב, כנ"ל ח"י אלול תשג"ה, ספרנו ח"ב, ספרנו ח"ד, ניתן להדפיס: צ"צ על משניות (פוטוגרפיא מדפוס הא') היום יום ה'תש"ד. מכינים לדפוס ספר מכתבי כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א.

ז) בבקשה להודיע אם התניא שהדפיס הוא פוטוגרפיא או סודר מחדש, כמה עקז' נדפסו ואם יש תח"י מאצטריצין וכיו"ב.
