To the great Rav, scholar who devotes himself to the

needs of the community, who fears Hashem,

Rav Eliezer[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I remember you from our meeting in 5687[2], in Petersburg. On that basis, I have good hope that the matter of which I will now speak will indeed be followed by positive effect.

According to the news that reaches me, the situation of the city of Philadelphia, in the area of chinuch*, is weakening day by day[3]. Parents and teachers among the refugees have come to see me, as have residents of your city. All complain and lament this situation, with regard to all that a satisfactory chinuch* of children should bring.

I address you on this matter, basing myself on the statement of our Sages* in the Sifra*, at the beginning of Parshas Tzav, that one urges zerizus* upon those who already possess this quality by nature. I therefore call your attention to this question.

I am sure that you will seek and find the appropriate means to improve the situation, to the fullest extent possible. Obviously, the sooner the better, for it is said: "If you forsake me for a day, I will forsake you for two"[4]. If this is so for study, how much more so for what concerns Yiddishkeit*, yiras Shamayim*, especially that of children, of the young generation, which is the future of our people.

I thank you in advance for kindly informing me what you think of all this and what means you intend to mobilize in this domain.

הנני זוכר את כהדר"ג שי' מיום נפגשנו בשנת תרפ"ז בפט"ב ועל יסוד זה תקותי חזקה אשר בדבר הענין דלהלן יביא לפועל טוב.

כפי הידיעות שמגיעים אלי ע"ד מצב החנוך בעיר פילדלפיא, הנה הולך הוא ופוחת מיום ליום, ובקרו אותי הורים ומורים פליטים וגם תושבים ממחנם הט' וכאו"א מתאונן וקובל ביותר על המצב בשדה החנוך הכשר"

ובזה הנני לפנות לכהדר"ג שי' בענין זה, נשען על מרז"ל בספרא ר"פ צו, אין מזרזין אלא למזורזין, להעיר את תשומת לבו על שאלה הנ"ל, אשר מובטחני שאז יחפש וגם בטח ימצא האמצעים המתאימים לשפר המצב עד כמה שאפשר ופשיטא אשר יפה שעה אחת קודם, מכיון שבאם תעזבני יום יומיים אעזבך, ואם נאמר זה על לימוד התורה הרי עאכו"כ בענינים דיהדות ויר"ש ובפרט בנוגע ילדים וילדות בנ"י הדור הצעיר שזהו עתידו של כל עמנו.

ת"ח מראש אם יודיעני מהשקפתו על הנ"ל וכן האמצעים אשר בדעתו לאחוז בענין זה.
