To the great Rav, Chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to the needs of the community,

Rav Moshe[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I obtain, from time to time, news of you through the residents of your city who come here on visits. I learned with satisfaction that you have communal responsibilities and that you strive to strengthen Torah and Yiddishkeit* in your city.

I would like, for the moment, to refer to a current concern — that of the chinuch* of the young generation. According to the news that reaches me from Philadelphia, the youth are losing themselves day by day. If exceptional means are not employed, there is every reason to think, from what I am told, that with few exceptions, all will turn away from Torah and mitzvos*, Heaven forbid.

Our Sages* say in the Sifra*, at the beginning of Parshas Tzav, that one urges zerizus* only upon those who already possess this quality by nature. I therefore wish to invite and encourage you, in every possible way, to give all the necessary attention to the problem of chinuch* in Philadelphia. You will invest yourself in this domain, in accordance with your possibilities and means, in order to improve the situation and to save Jewish souls from Gehinnom*, Heaven forbid. In accordance with the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, it is certain that an effort is never in vain.

I am convinced that it is unnecessary to elaborate further. I thank you for sending me the good news of the beginning of your concrete action. May Hashem grant you success.

I am also writing in this sense to the great Rav Pupko[2]. In addition, I have spoken about it orally with the great Rav and Chassid*, Rav Sh. T. Shneiderman[3]. The solution is obtained by multiplying counselors, especially since a great number is involved — in this case, all the youth of Philadelphia, whose fate hangs in the balance[4].

I also enclose the brochure[5] and the kuntres*[6] of Yud-Tes Kislev*, which have just appeared. You will surely make them available to as wide an audience as possible.

מזמן לזמן הנני מקבל ידיעות אודותו מהבאים ממחנו הט' לכאן, ונהניתי לשמוע אשר לוקח חלק הוא בעסקנות צבורית ומשתדל בהחזקת קרן התורה והיהדות במחנו הט'.

ועל של עתה באתי בדרישת השעה, והוא חינוך הדור הצעיר אשר כפי הידיעות שמקבל אני מהנעשה בפילדלפיא, הנה הנוער הולך ונגרע מיום ליום, אשר אם לא יאחזו באמצעים יותר מהרגיל, הרי ח"ו יש לחשוש כפי שמספרים לי, שכל הדור הצעיר לבד יחידי סגולה, יחידים בפו"מ, יתרחק ח"ו מהתורה והמצוה.

ועפ"י מרז"ל ספרא ר"פ צו, אין מזרזין אלא למזורזין, הנני בזה לעורר ולעודד בכל לשון של עדוד וחיזוק, להתעמק בתשומת לב המתאימה בדבר החנוך בעיר פילדלפיא, ולעשות בזה ככל האפשרי וככל יכולתו, לשפר את המצב ולהציל עי"ז נפשות בני ובנות ישראל מרדת שחת ח"ו, וידוע פתגם כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, חזקה לתעמולה שאינה חוזרת ריקם.

בטוח הנני אשר לכת"ר שי' האריכות בזה אך למותר, ות"ח מראש אם יודיענו בשו"ט אשר נגשו לעבודה בפועל, ויה"ר אשר חפץ ה' בידם יצליח.

כותב הנני עד"ז ג"כ להרה"ג פופקא שי' וכן דברתי בע"פ עם הרה"ג והרה"ח מוהרש"צ שי' שניידערמאן, ותשועה ברוב יועץ ובפרט אשר ברבים היו עמדם, היינו הנוער דעיר פילדלפיא אשר גורלם תלוי בכף מאזנים.
