Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1280 — Tzedakah
Volume 5 · Letter 58
B'ezras Hashem,
7 Kislev 5712,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the Chassidim* who are in Australia, and,
first of all, to the committee charged with the organization
of the Yeshivos of Shepparton and Melbourne[1],
may Hashem grant you long life,
Greetings and blessings,
I received with satisfaction your letter of the second day of Rosh Chodesh* Cheshvan, which reached me with delay. In this letter you communicate to me the resolutions of the meeting that was held in Melbourne concerning the transfer of the Yeshivah from Shepparton to Melbourne. In the meantime I have also learned that the building[2] will be inaugurated, in a good and propitious hour, on 10 Kislev.
On the occasion of the festival of inauguration of the Yeshivah, on the date of the liberation of the Mitteler Rebbe*[3], I extend to you my brachah* that the merit of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose name the Yeshivah bears[4], may arouse and reveal success and accomplishment in its mission of forming an upright generation.
This generation will be faithful to Torah and mitzvos*, suffused with the spirit of Chassidus*, the luminary of Torah. It will realize the goal and purpose of the founder of the Yeshivah, and those who constitute it will be "candles to illuminate" all those around them.
May Hashem bless the founders, collaborators, and donors of the Yeshivah, those who have rendered their support and those who will do so. This participation will bring to them, and to all who are theirs, brachah* and success, and they will illuminate their homes with all material and spiritual good.
To avoid any confusion, and especially so that my brachah* be intelligible to those who will take part in this celebration, I have requested that its content, translated into English, be sent by telegram. Every detail can deliver a teaching, and in this case, the celebration takes place on 10 Kislev, the day of the liberation of the Mitteler Rebbe* following his imprisonment. Our Rebbeim of every generation will surely reveal their merit so that those who lend their support and assistance to this great work may be blessed with all material and spiritual good.
To take up a topical point, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, told me that two young men in Liadi, in the time of the Alter Rebbe, were discussing Chassidus* while walking. When they returned, they met the Mitteler Rebbe*, who was charged with directing the young Chassidim*, while the elders were entrusted to Reb Aharon of Strashelye. The Mitteler Rebbe* asked the young men what they had been speaking about. They replied that they had been discussing the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov*, that the turnings of a leaf detached from a tree are determined by hashgacha pratis*. A Heavenly judgment decides where and when it must fall.
A few days later, the Mitteler Rebbe* told them that he had reported all of this to the Alter Rebbe, and that the latter had answered him: "Hashgacha pratis* extends not only to the leaf itself, but also to the reason and manner of its turnings — for example, whether it was detached from the tree by a man or by the wind."
What has just been said should console you. You think yourselves to be in a remote land, but, in light of what has just been said, you must understand that hashgacha pratis* is marked even in the smallest detail. It is the work of Hashem, the Quintessence of good, Who seeks to bestow His benefits, as Chassidus* explains, citing Kabbalah*, regarding creation[5].
It is therefore absolutely certain that, in the end, you will see the good of all those who participate in this celebration or who are concerned with it — a good visible and tangible, material and spiritual.
With my blessing,
