Volume 5 · Letter 55 · To: grand Rav

B'ezras Hashem,

5 Kislev 5712,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Eleazar Aryeh[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I was pleased to learn that with the help of Hashem, a Melaveh Malkah* will be organized in your honor on Motzei Shabbos* Parshas Vayeitzei. Without a doubt, the participants will come to your aid to the full extent of their means, so that you may settle properly and use your strength to lead the Jewish community and draw hearts close to their Father in Heaven, with tranquility of soul and body.

I extend to you, by these lines, my brachah*, in advance of those who will participate in this evening. Enclosed you will find a check corresponding to my participation, together with my brachah* that very soon you may know calm, both materially and spiritually.

At the end of Parshas Vayeitzei it is said: "And Yaakov went on his way, and the angels of Hashem encountered him. He called the place Machanaim[2]." Rashi explains: "There were two camps[3] — that of outside Eretz Yisroel and that of this land."

Thus, as soon as Yaakov set out on his way, he immediately encountered angels[4]. In this connection, our Sages* say[5]: "Open for Me an opening like the eye of a needle, and I will open for you like the gateway of the Sanctuary." Here he encountered both these camps.

In general, the life of a Jew has two aspects. The first is called "Eretz Yisroel." It is the time devoted to the study of Torah, to tefillah*, and to the fulfillment of mitzvos*. The second is the outside of this land — the concerns of the world — in which one must also put into practice the principle: "In all your ways, know Him," as the Rambam* explains at the beginning of Hilchos Deos*, and the Tur Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim chapter 231.

For both of these aspects together, the help of Hashem is necessary to us. Our Father in Heaven grants it to us amply, and we thus have the strength and the power to fulfill the mission entrusted to us in this world — to illuminate it and to hasten the day of which it will be said: "On that day Hashem will be One and His Name One"[6].

With my blessing,
