Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1269 — Shidduchim
Volume 5 · Letter 47
B'ezras Hashem,
5 Kislev 5712,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I have at last received your letter of 26 Marcheshvan, after a long interruption. You describe the situation in your city in general, and your own circumstances in particular. I hope that, by the time you receive the present letter, your circle of acquaintances will have expanded, so that you may draw their hearts to their Father in Heaven, illuminating them with "the candle is a mitzvah and the Torah is light"[1], and likewise with the luminary of the Torah, which is the teaching of Chassidus*.
You know the parable of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, that "when a streetlamp is placed in the street, all gather around it"[2]. From this two points emerge:
A) One cannot content oneself with the light one possesses at home. One must, in addition, set up a streetlamp in the street.
B) The side of good is stronger[3]. Thus, not only do the people upon whom one exerts one's effort gather around this streetlamp, but, more than that, the simple fact that it stands in the street, even in the middle of the night and in the darkness, draws those who are there.
In practice, one can see that the more intense the gloom, the more powerful the attraction exerted by the light of the streetlamp.
You write to me that, in order to prepare for your wedding, which will be celebrated in a good and propitious hour, you have had to interrupt part of your Torah studies. This does not suit me at all. On the contrary, if ordinarily it is necessary to strengthen oneself in Torah, which is the channel and the vessel for drawing down and receiving brachah* and success, how much more so when one must prepare for marriage.
To be sure, the wedding preparations take much of your time. Nevertheless, you should shorten your studies but not eliminate them, whatever their subject. For who can know which precise portion of the Torah he needs at this moment and in this place?
What has just been said allows one to understand the statement of our Sages* in Maseches Eruvin* 54a, that "one who has a headache should engage in Torah; one who has a sore throat should engage in Torah, for Torah brings healing"[4].
A simple question is raised on this. One can observe that some who have a migraine engage in Torah and are not healed by it. There are several answers to this question, and here is one of them.
The Torah contains within itself the equivalent of all the limbs of the body. It thus has passages connected to the head and others to the throat. Consequently, one who has a headache should engage in it, and if Hashem grants him the merit, he will then discover the passage of the Torah corresponding to the head, and through this be healed. Nevertheless, not all have eyes clear and luminous, enabling them to determine the passage of Torah corresponding specifically to each of their limbs.
Now, exactly the same applies to our subject. We do not know which portion of Torah is more specifically connected to your present situation. Through hashgacha pratis*, you have fixed shiurim* in several disciplines of Torah. You should therefore maintain them all, and if it is not possible to devote as much time to them as before, shorten them — but do not eliminate any of them entirely.
When I am at the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, I will mention all those whom you cite in your letter, that they may obtain the satisfaction of their needs.
I extend to you my brachah* for success in your educational work and in your personal concerns, and I wish you a good and propitious wedding, through which you will build an everlasting edifice for the people of Israel, founded upon Torah and mitzvos* as Chassidus* explains them. Without making it a vow, I will surely send you a letter of brachah* for your wedding.
Enclosed you will find a brochure[5] and a kuntres*[6] published for Yud-Tes Kislev*, as well as a letter addressed to all[7]. You will doubtless make them available to as wide an audience as possible.
With my blessing,
