To the Rav, distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem, Rav Zalman Shimon[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter, to which were enclosed your memoirs of the first years[2], when my father-in-law became the Rebbe. I thank you very much for them and ask you insistently to pursue their writing. Indeed, the accounts that you note are qualitatively dense, but quantitatively few in number. Doubtless, many others have remained in your memory. Moreover, if it is possible for you to encourage those who remember facts that occurred in the same period to write them down, I beg you to be so kind as to do so or else to tell me who they are, so that I may write to them directly.

I regret not having news of Rav Sh. M.[3], the shochet*. You will kindly communicate to me the information that you have, since he finds himself in proximity to your city.

You will find enclosed the kuntres* edited on the occasion of 20 Cheshvan, which you shall surely make available to the greatest number.

Here is the essential point that leads me to write to you. Among those[4] who have accompanied you, some do not possess a diploma[5]. I beg you therefore, in all possible ways and even beyond what is possible, to make them undergo an examination or to teach them the laws, so that they may complete their training and obtain this diploma while they find themselves in Calmel.

You shall transmit to them also, in my name, that I wish at all costs that they receive this training and that they obtain this diploma, that there can in no way be otherwise. To tell the truth, it did not even come to my mind that those who have already gone several times to Ireland could not have a shochet diploma. And, no need to insist on what is an obvious matter.

I hope that you yourself, on your side, and they[4], on theirs, shall do all that is necessary, in this domain. You shall give me joy in announcing the good news that all this has been concretely followed by effect, that the preparations have already begun. When the time comes, you shall tell me that everything has been done as it should.

It is surely useless to remind you of the necessity to prepare for the month of Kislev, which approaches, that is to say, for 10 and 19 Kislev, as well as for Chanukah[6]. It is surely possible to use these days to spread the wellsprings of the teaching of our masters and the Chassidic practices that they have instituted.

קבלתי מכתבו בצירוף רשימות זכרונות מהשנים הראשונות לנשיאות כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר, ות"ח על העבר ובקשה רבה וכפולה להמשיך בזה, כי אף שמרובים הסיפורים שרשם באיכות אבל מעטים הם בכמות, ובל"ס אשר רשומים בזכרונו עוד כהנה וכהנה, כן אם יש בידו לזרז את אלו שיודע שגם הם זוכרים ענינים וסיפורים מהשנים ההם, נא ונא לעשות בזה או להודיעני מי הם ואכתוב אני אליהם ישר.

מצטער הנני על העדר הידיעות ממצב הרה"ח מוהרש"מ שי' שו"ב ומטובו להודיעני את הידוע לו, כיון שנמצא הוא בסמיכות למחנם.

מוסג"פ הקונטרס לכ' חשון, ובודאי יזכה בו את הרבים.

ועל העיקר באתי, באשר באלו שנסעו אתו יחד ישנם אחדים שאין להם הודעה וקבלה, הנה נא ונא בכל לשון של בקשה ועוד יותר מזה, לבחנם כפי המצטרך או ללמוד עמהם יחד, ובלבד שמשך זמן המצאם בקאלמעל יקבלו כל הנ"ל הודעות וגם קבלות, וכן למסור להם בשמי ג"כ בכל לשון של בקשה, אשר אי אפשר בלאו הכי ואשר ישתדלו ככל המצטרך לקבל ההודעות והקבלות, והאמת אגיד אשר לא שערתי אשר מאחרי שנסעו כבר איזה פעמים לאירלאנד שלא יהי' בידם כל התעודות הדרושות לשו"ב, ואין להאריך בדבר הפשוט, ותקותי חזקה אשר כת"ר שי' מצדו וכל הנ"ל מצדם יעשו במרץ בכל הנ"ל וישמחוני בבשו"ט שבא הדבר הזה לפועל, ואשר כבר התחילו בההכנות הדרושות להנ"ל, ושבמשך זמן יודיע ג"כ ע"ד שבא לפועל ממש.

בטח למותר לעוררו ע"ד ההכנות הראויות בקשר עם חדש כסלו הבע"ל, והם יו"ד י"ט כסלו וימי חנוכה, שבודאי יש יכולת לנצל את אלו הימים בענין הפצת המעיינות תורת נשיאינו הקדושים והוראותיהם בדרכי החסידות.
