B'ezras Hashem,
23 Marcheshvan 5712,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I reply to your letter of 12 Marcheshvan, in which you tell me that you have accepted the principle of the studies of Torah[1] and of the donation to tzedakah* that were proposed to you[2], that you are already putting this good resolution into practice. But, as for the harmony of your couple, it seems superficially reestablished, but, more profoundly, all is not yet arranged.
I have already evoked this subject in my preceding letter. I warned you that the reestablishment of this harmony would doubtless pose problems for you. Now, it is precisely in this domain that a particular effort is necessary. All these difficulties are the proof that it is essentially this that one expects of you, as the writings of the Arizal* say and as Chassidus* explains. You shall consult, regarding this, the Kuntres HaAvodah, at the end of chapter 6.
With a few exceptions, the souls of our generation have already had at least one previous life. They are reincarnated, therefore, essentially to complete what may have been lacking in the accomplishment of the 613 mitzvos*, in these previous existences. Evidently, all must put into practice these 613 commandments, including those who had irreproachable conduct, during the previous lives.
Nevertheless, a difference exists. The yetzer hara* does not oppose itself strongly to the practice of the mitzvos that one has already accomplished, during the previous lives. It does so only to respect free will, since in this matter, all has already been realized beforehand.
On the other hand, what one has not brought to completion in a previous life, what has not yet revealed the elevation that this soul must have, is the object of the strongest opposition, on the part of the yetzer hara. And, no need to say more on what is perfectly explained, elsewhere.
For what concerns you and applies to your concrete conduct, which is essential, I would like to remind you, to engage you once again to make all possible efforts so that harmony be established within your couple, even if this imposes concessions on your part, provided these do not concern Torah and mitzvos. As I have already written to you, our Sages emphasize that a woman weeps easily, that the gates of tears are not closed, and that brachah* is granted to a man thanks to his wife.
