Igrot Kodesh · Letter 125 — Chanukah Candle-Lighting: Three Levels of Observance

Volume 1 · Letter 125

By the grace of Hashem,

Wednesday, 16 Tevet 5704,

To the great Rav, of virtuous conduct, the Rav ...

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your postcard, in its time, but, after a long search, I have just obtained the Birkas Avraham*, by Rabbi Avraham Abich, which you cite in your letter. This is why my response has been delayed until now and you will kindly excuse me.

As you request of me, I will cite the words of the grandson of the author, which appear in this book, to answer the question posed:

It is known that there is a normal way [1], a better way [2] and the best way [3] to light the Chanukah candles. Why does a similar distinction not exist for the other Mitzvos?

Here is what he says on this topic, the clarifications in parentheses being mine:

"We must understand why this Mitzvah* (that of the Chanukah lights) differs when one wants to put it into practice in a better way or in the best way. Moreover, if one wants to put it into practice in the better way and gathers, for this purpose, many family members, one will need to light a candle for each one, and this will therefore cost more than if one lights in the best way, for the entire family.

(This is the opinion of the Tosafos* and such is the Sefard* custom [4]. One may, moreover, wonder why the author mentions a custom that goes against the one observed in the regions from which he originates, since he presided over the rabbinical court of Seratsk [5]. But, perhaps he considers it a simple usage...)

In fact, the decree [6] concerned essentially the Shabbos*. Among the Jews, there were different opinions and some suffered from the blasphemy that was then being perpetrated. Others wanted to lead their material existence more easily. Consequently, each one experienced the victory in his own way. And, when the miracle was established, it was given to each one to celebrate it in his own way.

The purest, who accumulated Mitzvos, lit several candles. (He is no doubt alluding here to those who light in the best way). It is clear that the Mitzvah is more beautiful when all rest on a single reason. (One must understand what these words mean). The righteous [7], on the other hand, cannot accumulate many Mitzvos, which is difficult for them. They manage, however, to awaken their profound fear of Hashem. The righteous one does little, but in an honorable way. (It seems that this refers to the candle that each one lights).

This is therefore the reason why there are several ways of putting this Mitzvah into practice. The one who accomplishes it in the best way will seek to improve the Mitzvah itself. (Here too, one must understand what these words mean)."

One may raise questions on this:

A) According to what has just been said, the pure ones, who do not however equal the righteous, perform the Mitzvah in the best way and the righteous only in a better way. How is this possible?

B) It is known that, at the time of the exodus from Egypt, there were also several groups among the children of Israel. Thus, there were four, at the crossing of the Red Sea [8], as the Yerushalmi* says. This was also the case at the giving of the Torah. Hence, what is the specificity of the miracle of Chanukah?

C) In a more subtle manner, one can say that the answer given does not correspond to the question that was posed. For, the particularity of the Chanukah lights is not that there are three ways to light them — one candle per family, one candle per person, or an increasing number each day — whereas for the other Mitzvos, there are only two. Thus, one distinguishes an esrog* [9] the size of an egg from one that is larger.

Indeed, such an objection is not very strong:

1. It does not introduce a qualitative distinction in the practice of the Mitzvah. It is only quantitative.

2. The other Mitzvos also have more than two ways of accomplishing them. Thus, one distinguishes an esrog the size of an egg, another that is the equivalent of an egg plus a third, and a third that is even larger. And, the oil of the offerings is, in this sense, much closer to the Chanukah lights. One distinguishes, indeed, the very first oil, of irreproachable quality, then a second, and one thus defines five categories.

Similarly, the four species are also very close to the Chanukah lights. Thus, according to the Ramban*, one accomplishes this Mitzvah in the best way by taking three complete myrtle branches. If this is not possible, one takes three that are cut. If even that is not possible, one takes at least one that is cut. And the Rambam* specifies that it is preferable to have three cut ones rather than a single one, also cut. Moreover, he himself defines eight forms of Tzedakah*.

In fact, the question about the specificity of the Chanukah lights thus concerns a qualitative change.

For all the other Mitzvos, there is the Mitzvah proper and a better way of putting it into practice. Thus, the esrog, whether it is the size of an egg plus a third or larger than that, indeed allows one to accomplish the Mitzvah in the better way. Similarly, for the oil of the offerings, one will take the best among those available, as it is said "everything that is precious is for Hashem." For, the different categories of oil all allow one to put into practice the terms of this verse.

But, a particularity is specific to the Chanukah lights. Besides the better way of accomplishing the Mitzvah, there is also a third one, the best way.

If our Sages had said: "Those who want to apply the Mitzvah in the better way will each light one candle. But, there is a superior way of doing it, in decreasing number, according to Beis Shammai*, in increasing number, according to Beis Hillel*," no objection could have been raised against such a formulation [10], even if one retains the analysis of the Birkas Avraham, justifying why some light a single candle and others, a greater number.

* * *

In my humble opinion, the answer to the question posed — why is it precisely for the Chanukah lights that one defines the best way to accomplish the Mitzvah — can be deduced from an analysis, brief because time is lacking to develop it, of the meaning of a better accomplishment and, more generally, of a miracle. We will understand, in this way, the particularities of the Chanukah lights.

Our Sages ask for what reason the first paragraph of the Shema Yisrael* is read before the second. They explain that one must, initially, submit to the Divine yoke and then, subsequently, to that of the Mitzvos. The reward that one receives thus is specified by the verse "if you walk in My statutes, I will give you your rains in their time," so that all natural behaviors are directed toward the good.

Now, one can observe empirically that the one who acts by submission and by fear of the master will content himself with what he is required to do, since personally, he would prefer inactivity.

Conversely, the one who has refined his personality and mastered his evil inclination, according to the expression of the Rambam, will not content himself with putting into practice the order he receives. He will seek to do it in the best way. He will accomplish, in the best possible manner, also that which is not an absolute obligation.

It is the same for the reward of the Mitzvos.

Our Sages say that the Holy One, blessed be He, acts "measure for measure" [11].

One will therefore not give a man just exactly what a good behavior merits, in a natural way, limiting oneself to the strictly necessary retribution.

One will exceed, for him, the limit of this obligation. For example, if naturally, he should have been confronted with a certain difficulty, he will be preserved from it by a supernatural miracle.

Thus, our Sages explain, "the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Israel: How could I not be clement for the Jews when I have written in the Torah 'you will eat, you will be satisfied, and you will bless' and they nevertheless recite this blessing as soon as they have consumed a food the size of an olive or an egg?"

Certainly, it is said, at the same reference, that "miracles occurred to the early generations who gave of themselves to sanctify the Name of Hashem."

However, the self-sacrifice of which this text speaks does not necessarily lead to death. It has, more precisely, the effect of not taking into account one's own honor, one's financial means, even when one is not required to do so. And our Sages relate that Rav Ada Bar Ahava prayed that the entire community would adopt a miraculous behavior.

The miracles of the exodus from Egypt, of Purim, of the pillars of cloud [12] had essentially as their purpose to protect the children of Israel from a danger likely to arise or even already present.

This is the reason why one distinguishes, in the practices commemorating these miracles, the strict observance of the Mitzvah and a better way of putting it into practice.

The foundation of all the Commandments is the Precept "I am Hashem your L-rd Who brought you out of the land of Egypt" and our Sages explain: "This liberation justifies that you be subject to Me." They deduce from this: "be gracious before Me, through the practice of the Mitzvos."

All these elements were indeed gathered in the miracle of Chanukah, in which there was the victory and the miracle in battle, when "You placed the vigorous in the hands of those who were weak."

But, at Chanukah, there was, in addition, the miracle of the oil, which did not have as its purpose to save them from a misfortune, but to give them proof of the profound love of Hashem for Israel. Indeed, a miracle was then made solely so that the Jews could put a Mitzvah into practice. This is why a third dimension was added in this case, the best way of putting the Mitzvah into practice.

This also explains why this best way of accomplishing the Mitzvah consists precisely of lighting candles, which is directly linked to the miracle of the oil, and not of pronouncing an additional prayer or praise. Indeed, the relationship between this lighting and the miracle of the oil is self-evident.

Why is it precisely at Chanukah that such a miracle occurred?

One can understand this from the explanation according to which the Greeks did not want to physically massacre the Jews. The Jews lived on their land and possessed the Temple. In fact, the Greeks desired only "to make them forget Your Torah and make them transgress the statutes of Your Will." According to the expression of our Sages, they said to the Jews: "Write... that the L-rd of Israel is not yours."

The war was only the consequence of this demand, which allows one to justify the formulation of the Rambam, at the beginning of the Laws of Chanukah: "They attacked their possessions" only.

It is therefore at this time that a miracle occurred from which only the soul drew benefit.

* * *

All that has just been said allows one to answer the question posed, in its simplest dimension. To complete the analysis, I will also reproduce what I have found, on this topic, in the Chassidus:

A) The Kedushas Levi* says: "The pleasure that each thing procures is its finest dimension. Thus, the sacrifice of incense offered on Yom Kippur* consisted of the finest ingredients. Indeed, Yom Kippur is linked to the world of pleasure. Thus, spirituality is the highest dimension and pleasure, the finest dimension. And, the controversy opposing Beis Hillel and Beis Shammai, regarding the Chanukah lights, as to the necessity of lighting them in increasing or decreasing order, tends, in fact, to determine which is the most intense pleasure. Is it that of the body, linked to the accomplishment of the Mitzvah and which must therefore increase from day to day, or that of the possibility offered to accomplish it, which diminishes from day to day? It is therefore possible to accomplish this Mitzvah in the best way, which is here the finest dimension and corresponds to the world of pleasure."

One can, however, question this explanation. For, why is there not, in Yom Kippur, a best way of accomplishing the Mitzvah?

B) The Siddur Maharid*, by the grandson of the Tzemach Tzedek*, says: "The Mitzvah accomplished in a better way is linked to the system of Tikkun*. The one that is put into practice in the best way belongs to the world of Akudim*, higher than Tohu* and Tikkun combined."

Why does this concern precisely Chanukah? The Chassidus emphasizes that the Greeks entered the Sanctuary and defiled all its oils, which symbolize the Wisdom of the domain of Holiness. The miracle was then accomplished through a revelation transcending the chain of worlds.

In fact, these two explanations are convergent. Nevertheless, the Maharid establishes the source from which the miracle of Chanukah emanates and the spiritual worlds it traverses, while the Kedushas Levi defines their equivalences in the soul of man and the revelation of Chanukah as it appears after having already left its source.

The Admur HaEmtza'i* indicates that the small flask of oil discovered at that time symbolizes the deepest hidden pleasure, which is not yet revealed in conscious Wisdom. At this stage, the emotional manifestations of will and pleasure form only one single entity, entirely potential. Now, this is, in general, the definition given of the world of Akudim.

But, this analysis must still be deepened.

With my blessing of immediate Teshuvah, immediate deliverance,

* * *

* * *
