To the leaders of the yeshivah of Lod, may Hashem grant you long life,

Greetings and blessings,

I have received your letters, as well as the report of the yeshivah of 18 Tishrei, with the cards of the talmidim*, accompanied by their photographs. In seeing them, one recognizes children blessed by Hashem. It is regrettable that, with certain cards, no photograph is enclosed. You shall doubtless send them to me, the next time.

A) I am therefore missing the photographs accompanying cards no. 6, 29, 30, 31, 32, 35, 40, 44, 47, 91, 93, 100, 104, and 109. From no. 109, the cards themselves are missing.

B) You question me on the matter of delegating an emissary[1]. You say that you deduced from my letter[2] that I wished that he not go to certain countries. I do not know upon what you base this supposition. I was saying only that the institutions must consult with each other, so that there be no contradictions, confusions, and losses, due to trips that would not have been sufficiently organized.

It is surely possible to harmonize the trips, on behalf of the various institutions, in such a way that the delegate of yours also visit all the countries.

C) You ask me whether it is possible to grant to the person who shall be delegated the title of meshulach* of the Sages[3]. It is difficult for me to give my opinion without knowing of whom it is a question. Being on the spot, you shall doubtless be able to determine whether this man is up to the measure of the mission that is entrusted to him. Evidently, this also depends upon the country in which he shall go.

D) You ask me whether you should take a Rosh Yeshivah*, responsible for the studies of nigleh*[4]. This is entirely judicious, for various reasons, internal and external at once. Indeed, it is necessary to improve the study not only of Chassidus*, but also of nigleh of the Torah, which must be living, enthusiastic, passionate. A Rosh Yeshivah, capable of assuming this function, shall, doubtless, be of considerable contribution, in this domain.

E) It is difficult for me, from here, to designate someone[5], but I am certain that, after a trial, you shall be able to verify on the spot what influence such or such a Rosh Yeshivah could exert on the talmidim, their manner of enthusing them for study.

F) You question me on the program of studies. In general, the classes must be organized as they have always been, at the Lubavitch yeshivah, with, evidently, the necessary adaptations, in function of the conditions of the place where you find yourselves at present.

Nevertheless, a strict surveillance is necessary for the children originating from Yemen, who must accustom themselves to this organization, new for them. Likewise, it is evident that a particular approach to Chassidus is necessary, for what concerns them.

I have already emphasized[6] the importance of studying the Chassidic discourses of my father-in-law, the Rebbe[7].

G) Following upon what has just been said, I would like to emphasize once again the importance, in my view, of accustoming all the talmidim, or, at least, those who are capable, to recite publicly Chassidic discourses[8], including before those who are not Chassidim.

Likewise, I recall again that it is important to form educators and cadres among those who originate from Yemen.

H) I hope that you shall keep the promise formulated in your letter and that you shall also send the cards of the talmidim coming from Yemen, as well as information on those who work for the yeshivah. I thank you in advance for it.

I) I would like to know whether, since the start of the school year, you have a greater number of talmidim and, if so, who they are.

You have surely received my greetings through the intermediary of the Rav, distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav S. Gourary[9]. You have doubtless organized together a farbrengen*, as I suggested to him, before he left here again. I hope that this has reinforced the actions in course, has enlarged them, and has permitted to introduce new ones.

With my brachah* of success in your sacred mission and in greeting each of you,

You will find enclosed the kuntres* edited on the occasion of 20 Marcheshvan, which we have just edited.

It seems to me I have already told you that the esrog* that you sent me reached me on time. I thank you very much for it.

בנועם קבלתי מכתביכם, וכן הדו"ח מהישיבה מי"ח תשרי, בצירוף גליונות התלמידים עם תמונותיהם, אשר רואיהם יכירום כי זרע ברך ה' הם. חבל אשר בכמה גליונות חסרה התמונה, ובטח ימלאו זה בפעם הבאה.

חסרות תמונות בגליונות מס':6, 29, 30, 31, 32, 35, 40, 44, 47, 91, 93, 100, 104, 109. ממספר 109 ואילך חסרים גם הגליונות.

ב) בנוגע לשאלתם בענין שילוח שד"ר, וכותבים אשר כנראה ממכתבי אין דעתי נוחה מנסיעתו למדינות אחדות, איני יודע על מה מיוסדת השערתם זו, ודעתי היא רק שהמוסדות צריכים להתדבר זה עם זה, באופן שלא יהיו סתירות ובילבולים והזיקות מנסיעות בלתי מסודרות. ובטח אפשר לסדר הנסיעות מהמוסדות השונים באופן שכזה, שגם שליח המוסד שלכם יוכל לבקר בכל המדינות.

ג) בנוגע לשאלתם בענין שילוח איש פרטי אם מסוגל הוא להיות שד"ר, קשה לי לחוות דיעה מבלי הכירי אותו פנים, ובטח על אתר יוכלו לברר עד כמה מתאים הוא לשליחות זו, ובודאי נוגע בזה ג"כ לאיזה מדינה עליו לנסוע.

ד) במענה על שאלתם בענין לקיחת ר"מ מיוחד ללימוד הנגלה, נכון הדבר במאד, ומכמה וכמה טעמים, הן כלפי פנים והן כלפי חוץ, כי צריך להשתדל ביותר לא רק בהרמת אופן לימוד החסידות אלא בהרמת אופן לימוד הנגלה שיהי' בחיות, מיט א לעבעדיקייט, און צוגעקאכטקייט, ובטח אשר ר"מ מיוחד מתאים לזה יוכל להועיל בזה הרבה והרבה.

ה) קשה לי מכאן לחוות דיעה בנוגע לאיש פרטי, אבל בטוח אני שעל אתר יוכלו לברר אחר הבחינה באופן ההשפעה של הר"מ פלוני או פלוני על התלמידים, ועד כמה הוא מעורר חיות בלימודים וכו'.

ו) במענה על שאלתם בענין סדר הלימודים, הנה בהכיתות בכלל צריכים להשתדל שיהי' קרוב להסדר שהי' בתומכי תמימים מאז, כמובן בשינויים המוכרחים מפני התנאים במקומם עתה (לבד בילדי תימן שזקוקים הם להשגחה מעולה עד שיתרגלו להסדרים החדשים, וכן גישה מיוחדה בענין לימוד החסידות, אשר כמובן מוכרח הוא גם בשבילם), וכבר עוררתי מאז ע"ד לימוד מאמרי כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר.

ז) בהמשך להנ"ל אדגיש עוה"פ על דבר הנחיצות לפי דעתי להרגיל את כל התלמידים, עכ"פ אלו שיש להם שייכות לזה, בחזרת מאמרי דא"ח ברבים, וגם לפני בע"ב מחוגים שלא מאנ"ש. וכן אדגיש עוה"פ על דבר הנחיצות להקים מחנכים ומדריכים מבין ילדי תימן גופא.

ח) אקוה למילוי הבטחתם במכתבם לשלוח ג"כ את הגליונות מילדי תימן, וכן במה שנוגע להעובדים בההנהלה, ות"ח מראש.

ט) אתענין לדעת אם לזמן הלימודים דעתה הרחיבה גבולם בתלמידים ומאיזה סוג.

פ"ש מהרבני וו"ח אי"א נו"נ עוסק בצרכי ציבור וכו' מהר"ש שי' גורארי' בטח קיבלו, ובודאי היתה גם התועדות חסידותית, כמו שדברתי אתו קודם נסעו מכאן.

ואקוה אשר ההתועדות הביאה התחזקות בפעולות הקיימות והתרחבותן והתעוררות לפעולות חדשות.
