To the union of young women of the Chabad community, in Montreal, to whom Hashem shall grant long life,
Greetings and blessings,
I received with satisfaction the letter written by the secretary of your group, Mrs. Chaya Kremer[1], who tells me that officers have been designated, that an executive committee has been named, and who asks me for a brachah* that you may know success in your action.
I wish to all of you, and first of all to the officers, that this action be fruitful, that you spread the clarity of Torah and mitzvos*, in general, of Chassidus* and Chassidic practices, in particular, not only in your own home, but also in your surroundings. In this way, each of you shall be a beacon, illuminating what surrounds her, in the midst of the darkness of galus*.
To someone who complained of finding himself alone, in surroundings devoid of all spirituality and, evidently, distant from Chassidus, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, replied[2]: "When one lights a streetlamp, in the street, during the night, all draw near to it."
Two points follow from this:
A) A Jew, in general, and a Chassid in particular, man or woman, cannot content himself with possessing a streetlamp at home. He must also carry it into the street.
B) The persons for whom an effort is necessary so that they draw closer shall thus gather. Moreover, certain circles will present themselves spontaneously, in order to find themselves near the streetlamp.
May Hashem grant that this increased light, which each of you shall project into the street, be considerably multiplied by the Almighty. Thus, each shall be illuminated, materially and spiritually.
With my brachah of success in your action, in the communal domain as in your personal concerns,
and in awaiting the good news that you have indeed set yourselves to the work and that you already see the fruit of it,
